Steve Batson
Steve Batson was born in Travelers Rest, South Carolina in 1952. At the time his family had been in Traveler's Rest since leaving Georgia in the 1790's. Though educated in South Carolina schools, Steve performed his undergraduate studies at Carson-Newman College in East Tennessee and his graduate work at Clemson University. Steve's father was an educator and served as Superintendent of Schools in Dorchester County near Charleston for many years. Steve says "I was born with one foot in the mountain highlands and raised with the other foot in the rice country of Charleston." Steve was a policeman for many years and is now a Counselor in a community college. He states his daughters, Elizabeth Lee, Sally Ann Stuart, and Ashley Virginia . . . are wonderful. If a dad can say that about three teenage daughters . . . then it's gotta be true. Steve and his family once drove several hours out of their way just to meet me and bring me some very wonderful gifts. I received a basket with BBQ sauce, wine (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), rice mixtures, nuts, chocolate, Carolina peach preserves, a gold palmetto book leaf, and a gold South Carolina Seal ornament. Also received was the book "The Defense of Charleston Harbor." All of these items were made in South Carolina with the exception of the wine which was made in North Carolina. Steve stated that he did this in appreciation of my work on the Dixieland Ring. This is so heartwarming. The gifts were nice, but the greatest gift of all was the time spent with a fellow compatriot. Steve has a ferocious loyalty to the South is an avid reader and a renowned historian. Jack B. Harris
