Caught, more or less by accident, the always ebullient Sir Roland Hanna at Blues Alley last night, in a trio with Eddie Locke on drums, and Jon Burr (a younger guy, very nice soloist, great interplay and touch w/Hanna) on bass. Locke was on a bunch of Pablo recordings -- Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, among others -- a ton of fun.
Hanna said they lost their music and so were gonna play standards -- they flew through "In a Mellotone," a reworked "Satin Doll" where Locke stole a drum solo at the end, an extremely uptempo "Yesterdays" -- more standards in the middle including a hauntingly lovely, rumbly "Say It Isn't So" and wrapped things up an hour or so later with "Caravan" featuring Locke all over the place.
Who sez showmanship is dead?
