Last night Bristol's jazz crowd assembled in "St George's" - a church converted into a very fine concert hall, especially for chamber music.
The sold out concert was Kenny Wheeler (tpt), Lee Konitz (Alto Sax), John Abercrombie (guitar) and Dave Holland (bass) - currently touring the UK.
I could listen to Holland & Abercrombie play together four hours and hours -they played mellow, funky, tasteful, interesting stuff. Unfortunately, often when the horns joined in served as a lesson to all that dodgy intonation and ensemble playing are the first things that get heard - it was a bit of a struggle for me to get beyond that to what was certainly intelligent improvisation over very complex harmonies. One exception was when Konitz played a great version of Body & Soul.
I've seen KW and LK mentioned on many recent posts recommending good albums, few of which I've heard - will give them a try that way.
Looking forward to this Sunday's Bristol gig - Clark Tracey leads a tribute to Art Blakey, with Jean Toussaint, Guy Barker, Andy Panayi, John Donaldson, & Dave Green, in "The Old Tobacco Factory" - nicotine's association with jazz continues in these healthier days!
