Last call for Membership
Have you been good this year? It's time to make your Christmas list. What would you like to get? How about deep-fried turkey, Conchon de Lait, cornbread, collard greens, and the music of Sheryl Comier?
It's getting to be the time of year to think about our BIG event - The Christmas Party. The party will be held on Saturday, December 6th, at the Sons of Italy Hall in Tampa (same place as last year). Admission is free to current club members; all you have to do is present your membership card at the door. As always, non-members are welcome; however, they will have to pay an admission charge for the dinner and the evening's entertainment. If you're not a member, better join now. This party alone makes the membership fee more than worth while.
No additional memberships will be accepted between October 31st and December 6th. So, stop putting it off!! JOIN TODAY. If you DELAY, you're gonna have to PAY!! You can fill out a membership form online right now if you like! Membership Form (Note: We have to receive your check, too!)
Looking for Board Members
Members are elected to the Board of Directors at the Christmas party each year. It's a lot of fun to be involved in planning the Club's functions and seeing what it really takes to plan a function. There can be a maximum of 9 Board members and we will have a few vacancies this year.
The Board meets once a month, usually at the Picadilly Cafeteria, Westshore Plaza, for about two hours. This all takes place in a very casual atmosphere (over dinner, of course). During that time, decisions are made about the Club's upcoming activities and events.
We're looking for a few people who have some creative ideas; so, join the fun, join the Board! Get involved in deciding your club's future. Contact one of the present Board members or call the Club Hotline - 264-9651 - to put your name on the ballot. Without a good, strong Board, who knows what will be in store for the Club next year??
Cajun Dance Tapes
Wanna learn those neat Cajun steps you've seen others do on the dance floor?? We have a few Introduction to Cajun Dancing and Advanced Cajun Dancing tapes (VHS) left. The Introduction tape takes you through the basic moves step-by-step, and the Advanced tape will teach you all the really fancy steps.
They're a great bargain - just $24.50 each (tax is included). We have only a few tapes of each left; so, give us a call at the Hotline - 264-9651 - to reserve your tape(s) OR pick them up at the next function or Happy Hour (if there are any left).
Friday, October 10th
Another Happy Hour. This one will be at Café Creole in Ybor City. We have the patio in the rear of the building reserved for the Club's festivities. There's plenty of parking available, and we will have a real good time. This patio has plenty of room for minglin' and dancin'. We'll be spinning Cajun tunes, so - come out and dance under the stars.
Festivities will begin around 6 p.m. and wind up when everybody leaves. Come early and bring some friends.
Saturday, October 18th
The place: The Cajun Café on the Bayou
The time: noon 'till...
The occasion: The Great Gumbo CookOff and pre-Halloween party
All you folks who call yourselves "Cajun cooks" will want to attend this event! The Cajun Café on the Bayou is presenting a gumbo cooking contest with cash prizes. All participants will pay an entry fee of $15 and the amount of cash prizes will depend upon the number of participants entering the contest. Cooking will begin around noon and judging for the best gumbo will be around 5 p.m. Cajun music will be provided throughout the day. Free lessons for newcomers to Cajun dancing will be given at 6 p.m. and advanced lessons will be at 7 p.m. Bring your friends and we'll teach them to dance!
At 8 p.m. - the Porchdogs will take the stage for even more dancin'. I'm sure you remember the last time the Porchdogs played at the Café; they were absolutely terrific!! Well, they'll be here again. Don't miss this event and don't forget to bring your friends!
$5 entry for members, $8 entry for non-members - so bring your membership card.
November Happy Hour
We'll be having another Happy Hour, hopefully on a Friday night, sometime in early November. All we need is a venue. If any of you folks know of a place that might meet the Club's needs, give us a call at 264-9651.
November Party
We're trying to get Swamp Grass back for another Saturday evening of dancin'. We'll have to let you know their schedule and the venue that's selected. There's plenty of time yet, so we'll let you know more about this event in the next newsletter.
Saturday, December 6th
Christmas Party time!! This is the big event of the year! It'll be at the Sons of Italy Hall, just like last year. Plenty of food and dancin'. Sheryl Comier will be providing the music and she'll be playin' from 8 p.m. till midnight - BUT, you'll have to come early to get your food and socialize a bit before you start dancin' off all that good food.
We'll give you more details in the next newsletter.
Note: We do need some HELP with the party - if you're interested in helping or able to help out, please click on HELP!
Tee Shirt Design
Feelin' creative? Too much time on your hands?
How about winning $50 and a couple of 1998 Cajun Connection Tee Shirts!!
It's time to come up with a design for next year's T-shirt and we need your help; so, why not have a contest? Next year's T-shirts will feature a design submitted by the winning Club member (or non-member). All ideas must incorporate the Club name, Louisiana and Florida, and something about the Cajun culture. Remember, that's what we're all about; the rest is up to your creativity.
All entries must be received by October 31, 1997, and the winning design will be chosen by the Board of Directors at their November meeting. So, take a few minutes, have some fun, and send your ideas to The Cajun Connection, PO Box 17431, Tampa, FL 33682.
You could be THE WINNER!!
Happy Hours
We have been having a few Happy Hours recently at Duke's in south St. Petersburg. Not that we're unhappy with Duke's; but, we're always looking for good venues for a Happy Hour at locations throughout the Tampa Bay area. The next one will be at Café Creole in Ybor City.
Happy Hours have been on Wednesday nights; however, most folks want to get home early because of work the next day. We thought we'd try something different and see how you all like it. The next few Happy Hours will be on Friday nights. That'll give you something to celebrate - the end of the week! It'll also mean that, for most of you, you won't have to get up early the next day. Don't just come alone. I'm sure you work with folks who might be interested in dancin' and the Cajun way of life. Bring a friend (or 2 or 3 or...) so that we can ALL have a real good time.
WMNF Pledges
Don't forget our friends at WMNF. The radio station will be hosting their Fall pledge drive during the first week of October. If you usually pledge to the station, or even if you're not a regular listener, give us a call and make your pledge through the Club. For each $150 pledge the Club conveys to the station, we'll be able to co-host one 2-hour Traffic Jam show during which we'll spin all your favorite Cajun tunes. Along with your pledge, let us know your favorite tune and, if we can find it, we'll spin it for you.
Call the Hotline at 264-9651 with your pledge today!
