Gramophone Jazz Good CD Guide
The latest record in Coltrane's discography I'd unqualifiedly recommend to a person who feels queasy in the face of religious conviction or bored in the face of energy playing. It is also one of his absolute best. Crescent is soaked in regret; its mood isn't just the blues, it's understanding. It's not anger or joy, but quiet compassion, and Coltrane scales back his own playing to a distilled presence. His solos, full of patient, rotating three-note phrases on a single chord while the band moves on beyond him, like a man leaving the mainstream of life to understand fully one sure thing are some of the great dramatic moments in jazz. Lonnie's Lament is surely one of the finest modern jazz ballads, with a nearly foolproof 32-bar theme. And Elvin Jones's The Drum Thing gently explores the melodic values of a trap set; rarely do drum solos contain such serenity. The last stop before A Love Supreme, these were charmed sessions. Impulse!'s digital remastering is surprisingly warm a big improvement over the initial MCA CD issue. -- © Gramophone Publications Limited 1997

Perhaps looking to renew his inspiration or maybe simply wanting to broaden his horizons, Duke Ellington began a string of collaborations in the second half of his career--whereas before that, his own band was stimulus enough. Whatever the reason, almost all of his collaborations succeeded at high levels, although none of his shared sessions are more intriguing on the surface than this 1962 date with the preeminent sax star of the day. In reality, the record amounts to "Coltrane Plays Ellington" (plus one Coltrane original) because the tenor man is the whole show--and what a show it is. Only Coltrane could be as "fiercely tender," and there's no better forum for his sensitive side than the music of Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, who contributes the album's true vertex, "My Little Brown Book." The rhythm section alternates between Duke's and Trane's, each adding a different texture to the proceedings. Ellington is wise enough to appreciate the nature of the session, and he is quite content to feed chords in service of the young master--proving the old master's open mind and good taste. Hearing Coltrane seize "In a Sentimental Mood" is thanks enough. --Marc Greilsamer

An excellent grouping of a different 'Side' of Coltrane
This is an excellent sample of his 'gentler' music and a good way to work your way into his other CD's, 'Ballads', 'Blues', 'Coltrane and Johnny Hartman', etc.. I am not sure if this CD has a discography to reference where the original recording is. That would be a plus..

Amazon.com essential recording
Released in January 1960, John Coltrane's first album devoted entirely to his own compositions confirmed his towering command of tenor saxophone and his emerging power as a composer. Apprenticeships with Dizzy, Miles, and Monk had helped focus his furious, expansive solos, and his stamina and underlying sense of harmonic adventure brought Coltrane, at 33, to a new cusp--the polytonal "sheets of sound" that distinguished his marathon solos were offset by interludes of subtle, concise lyricism, embodied here in the tender "Naima." That classic ballad is a calm refuge from the ecstatic, high-speed runs that spark the set's up-tempo climaxes, which begin with the opening title song, itself a cornerstone of modern jazz composition. This exemplary reissue benefits from eight alternate takes of the original album's seven stellar tracks, excellent remastering of the original tapes, and an expanded annotation. --Sam Sutherland

A Glimpse into the Mind of a Musical Genius
2 years ago I was a Product Manager at Rhino Records and had the privilege to work on this box set. I had been a fan of John Coltrane for many years. Being a musician myself, I appreciated him not only for his musical talent, but for the tremendous spirituality, dicipline and courage it was born from. After going through the production of this box set -- hearing the music, and outtakes contained in it, talking to Coltrane contemporaries, critics and fans in putting together the packaging, I was even more in awe of this incredible man. There were others among his contemporaries who transcended boundaries and opened new approaches to the art of jazz, but Coltrane moved beyond that. In many ways he freed the jazz musician, by showing the way to go beyond the expression of more placid emotion to shrill passion, abandon, rage and rapture. He moved the fences and then moved them again. So radically different was Coltrane's style and artistry that it evoked high emotions and controversy. But, as any true visionary would, Coltrane remained outside the controversy, oblivious to those who are compelled to categorize art. He remained true to the spiritual soul and artistic vision which moved through and guided his genius. His death in 1967 brought an end to a career spent in pursuit of expressing the true emotion of his music. This box set forever captures a glimpse of his genius at work. No other Coltrane recording will take you inside his creative process. You will actually hear the birth of Giant Steps as he is creating it! For anyone who loves John Coltrane, you'll love and appreciate him even more when you hear this set.

Amazon.com Review
This is one of the three all-ballad albums that John Coltrane recorded in late 1962 and early 1963. Johnny Hartman was apparently Coltrane's suggestion, and his deep, dark voice meshes perfectly here with Coltrane's tenor. The material is well-chosen, including definitive readings of "My One and Only Love" and "Lush Life." McCoy Tyner fills out the chords, augmenting the harmonies and keeping the tone of these ballads respectful but not overly sentimental. All the players get to the deep structure of the songs and are not afraid to play in the most essential and elegant manner. This is beautiful jazz. --Michael Monhart

Amazon.com Review
John Coltrane recorded far too much landmark jazz for it ever to fit on just two CDs, but this set is a good introduction to the arc of his career. The set begins with an unreleased '46 jam session from Coltrane's days in the navy; it continues with examples of his sideman work for Dizzy Gillespie, Gay Crosse, Johnny Hodges, Red Garland, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk. Coltrane finally steps forward as a major composer and bandleader with 1957's Blue Train for Blue Note Records. The box set then presents seven of his classic 1959-'60 recordings for Atlantic, including "Giant Steps," "Naima," and "Central Park West," before concluding with two unreleased live performances, including a 25-minute version of "My Favorite Things." The Last Giant doesn't include any tracks from the Columbia or Impulse labels, but it's still the best introduction to 'Trane available. --Geoffrey Himes

The Classic Quartet At Its Best!
This 1/2 live,1/2 studio recording has the quartet at its best. From the wild explorations of "Afro Blue"and "The Promise" to the softer sounds of "I Want to Talk About You" and "Alabama", this recording shows that this band was one of the best ensembles put together! For those who like the wilder explorations, buy "A Love Supreme" and "Africa Brass Sessions". For those who like the ballad work try "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman","Duke Ellington and John Coltrane" and "Ballads".

Enough about the sound quality! (this fan is refering to other critics complaining about the sound quality)
The music is so astonishing you hardly notice the low-fi noise. Both musicians are at their best: Trane is furious and ecstatic, Monk is spacey and crystalline, playing lovely counter-melodies under Trane rather than straight ahead comping. (if only Wilbur Ware were on the bass rather than whoever is playing, though he's competent.) This is a truly unique experience, must have been like hearing Bird and Diz together live.

Amazon.com Review
John Coltrane's legendary 1961 stint at the Village Vanguard marked one of many watersheds in his career. For the first time on record, Coltrane was delving into extended solos, featuring another saxophonist in his front line and extending the rhythmic palette of his group to include East Indian tinges. Eric Dolphy stands out in the Village Vanguard sessions, both for his poingnant bass clarinet work on "India" and for his dragon-like alto sax elsewhere. As usual with the "classic" Coltrane Quartet, pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones create a storm of crisp chords and torrential rhythms. This creates an ideal foil for Coltrane's irrepressible saxophone creativity. Andrew Bartlett

A Love Supreme is a suite about redemption, a work of pure spirit and song, that encapsulates all the struggles and aspirations of the 1960s. Following hard on the heels of the lyrical, swinging Crescent, A Love Supreme heralded Coltrane's search for spiritual and musical freedom, as expressed through polyrhythms, modalities, and purely vertical forms that seemed strange to some jazz purists, but which captivated more adventurous listeners (and rock fellow travelers such as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, and the Byrds), while initiating a series of volatile, unruly prayer offerings, including Kulu Su Mama, Ascension, Om, Meditations, Expression, Interstellar Space. From the urgent speech-like timbre of his tenor, to the serpentine textures and earthy groove of Elvin Jones's drumming, Coltrane's suite proceeds with escalating intensity, conveying a hard-fought wisdom and a beckoning serenity in the prayer-like drones of "Psalm," where Jones rolls and rumbles like thunder as Garrison and Tyner toll away suggestively--all the while Coltrane searches for that one climactic note worthy of the love he wants to share. --Chip Stern

John Jones (BoysNTrees@aol.com) from Seattle WA , December 19, 1998
A timeless jazz classic
Among the considerable body of fine work by master saxophonist John Coltrane, "Lush Life" certainly stands out. "Like Someone in Love" and "I Love You" are given exquisite readings, and the Coltrane original "Trane's Slo Blues" is a not-so-slow delight. The fact that his reading of the jazz classic "Lush Life" clocks in at over thirteen minutes without wasting one second says something about the power of Coltrane and the gifted musicians that back him, such as the incomparable Red Garland on piano on the title track and "I Hear a Rhapsody." Gorgeous readings of classic tunes and another innovative angle of Trane's artistry make "Lush Life" a must-have for any fan of jazz.

This 1960 recording was a landmark album in John Coltrane's career, the first to introduce his quartet with pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones and the first release on which he played soprano saxophone. It also provided him with a signature hit, as his new group conception came together wonderfully on the title track. It's an extended modal reworking in 6/4 time that brought the hypnotic pulsating quality of Indian music into jazz for the first time, with Coltrane's soprano wailing over the oscillating piano chords and pulsing drums. The unusual up-tempo version of Gershwin's "Summertime" is a heated example of Coltrane's "sheets of sound" approach to conventional changes, while "But Not for Me" receives a radical harmonic makeover. This is an excellent introduction to Coltrane's work. --Stuart Broomer

Gramophone Jazz Good CD Guide
The conservative listener is more likely to find pre-1961 Coltrane preferable to the later work where his tendency to prolixity was so often given its head. The intense and precise nature of his inventions on albums such as this one and on the contemporary ones he made with Miles Davis (see below) brought a succinct and powerful new manner of improvising into jazz. Most of Coltrane's important innovations had become apparent by the time of this session, made with two thirds of the Davis rhythm section (for some reason Taylor replaced Philly Joe Jones). The intensity of Coltrane's feeling is offset by the elegant piano playing of Red Garland, sounding much more relaxed playing for Coltrane than he did for Davis, who was apt to be more proscriptive about how his pianists played. Having said that Coltrane is succinct, so he is, but some of the tracks are quite long, with Good Bait running for 12 minutes. I Want to Talk About You lasts for 11 minutes and is the earliest recording of a tune that Coltrane was later to play almost nightly. It is a beautiful blues ballad composed by Billy Eckstine and is particularly suitable for the keening melodicism with which the tenorist imbues it. This is arguably Coltrane's best work before the Giant Steps album which opened another phase of his career a year or so later. -- © Gramophone Publications Limited 1997

Amazon.com Review
This set is drawn from a February 15, 1967, recording session--one of John Coltrane's last days in the studio. The tapes had been in Alice Coltrane's care since the recording, and she gave titles to the pieces, overseeing their release on CD in 1995. All are previously unreleased with the exception of "Offering" which appeared on Expression. As on that release, there's evidence here that Coltrane's relentless musical search was drawing him ever further out. The performances are shorter, focused, with a magisterial lyricism seamlessly integrated with exclamatory shrieks and cries. There is an aching, though rough-hewn, beauty to Coltrane's playing on these tracks. With the exception of "Tranesonic" where he is on alto, he plays tenor sax throughout. His command of the instrument from the very bottom of the low register to the stratospheric heights of the altissimo is staggering--note in particular his "duet" with himself on "Sun Star" where he questions and answers with himself on the extreme ranges of the horn. There's a depth and wisdom to these recordings that only further extends the Coltrane legacy. --Michael Monhart

It is Luminous
Has anyone else ever noticed that Coltrane spent much of his post-"A Love Supreme" career trying to create an album with the same religious and artistic fervor? Right down to the titles of the songs and their order, Sun Ship follows a similar arc. In this case, you could say that we get enlightenment first in the form of a Sun Ship. Then we are all gathered together (Dearly Beloved), and we have closure (Amen). This then gives us Resolution; we resolve to go out and Pursue, or, Attain that which the Sun Ship has promised. At the end of this particular suite (and make no mistake, this is a suite- if not by name then by feel), we simply ascend, having already sang our sacred songs (Psalm).

All that said, this is a very interesting album, particularly for those who are curious to hear what the later quartet stuff sounds like. This is either the last or the second to last album they would ever record together. There seems to be a palpable heaviness pervading all the music, as if they knew what was to come.

On a side note, it is interesting to hear current, less thematic albums treading the same music territory. This album reminds me of the recent Branford Marsalis effort, "Requiem", which I would also recommend and to the same people. This album points us toward the path that has lead to modern 'free' jazz.

Among Thelonious Monk's long stays at New York's legendary Five Spot was a six-month period in 1957 with possibly his most brilliant band, with John Coltrane finding fuel in Monk's music for his harmonic explorations. The quartet only recorded three studio tracks: a sublime reading of Monk's ballad "Ruby, My Dear"; a loping version of "Nutty"; and a stunning version of "Trinkle Tinkle" on which Trane's tenor mirrors Monk's piano part. The CD is completed with outtakes from an octet session that joined Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins and an extended solo version of "Functional." --Stuart Broomer

great stuff!
This half-hour recording features John Coltrane and the "classic quartet" (coltrane, tyner, garrison, and jones) at their peak in 1963. A good amount of video time is devoted to each member, naturally with more on coltrane. Three selections are performed-- Afro Blue, Alabama, and Impressions, and although it seems like a little bit is clipped from the beginning and ending of the first and last, Ralph Gleason's show lived up to it's reputation in letting the artist play what they want for as long as they want to... at one point garrison goes off on a lengthy but awe-inspiring solo that gives the impression that it would have kept going forever had coltrane not jumped in. All in all, an essential purchace for any Coltrane fan, or for anyone simply wishing to get a taste of the power with which the group performed. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of this series.

A must see for the true jazz enthusiast. It will touch you.
The video gives a comprehensive overview of Trane's career. Although the biographical coverage is superficial, it does provide some chilling clips of some hypnotic performances. The producers offer us a great deal of live tape spanning his career without littering the film with excessive hype and the unwelcomed, unsavoy commentary that we so often find in documentaries of popular artists. I found myself longing for more performance, especially from the 50's and early 60's during his collaborations with Miles and Theloneous. It also lacks bio for his supporting musicians such as Flanagan, Tynor, and bassist-extraordinaire Paul Chambers, who made such great contributions in the creation of Trane's treasured works of art (After all, how many musicians can run with the complexity and intensity of Trane's work's like "Giant Steps"?). Watching this video left me with a great yearning to see all those performances from which those soul teasing clips came. To the producers credit, they would need half a dozen videos to cover the depths of Trane's prolific career. This video does an excellent job of commanding awe and respect for the greatest spiritual artist in jazz-- John Coltane.
