Canadian Jazz Transciptions

Ed Bickert's intro/solo on 'Everything I Love'
This is a beautiful solo from an album Ed did in 1974 with Paul Desmond. Ed plays incredibly on the entire album, and I had a very hard time picking which tune to lift. Watch for his subtle re-harmonizations of the changes in his chordal playing. Taken from the album "Pure Desmond", featuring Paul Desmond on alto, Ed on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. The album is available on CBS records.

Paul Bley's solo on 'All the Things You Are'
A transcription of pianist Paul Bley playing "All The Things You Are" from the album "My Standard".

Pat LaBarbera's solo on 'Footprints'
Pat's solo on 'Footprints' is a great showcase for his fondness for creating many different sounds over fairly static chords. As the solo progresses, and the energy builds, he begins to introduce more tension by the use of substitute scales and related pentatonics. The tensions gradually move from mild dissonance in the first few choruses (nat. 7, nat. 6, b6 on Cmin) to extreme dissonance in the later choruses (b9 on Cmin). The result is an exciting solo which masterfully builds tension and energy throughout.

Mike Malone's solo on 'Both Feet'
A perfect example of Mike's ability to ignite a band with short phrases that swing . 'Both Feet' includes Alex Dean on tenor, Mike on trumpet, Mark Eisenman on piano, Kieran Overs on bass, and Joe Bendzsa on drums, and is available on the BMI label.

Reg Schwager's solo on 'One Way Out'
A transcription of Reg's solo on "One Way Out" from The Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra album "Different Paths".

Kevin Turcotte's solo on 'Tofino in May'
This is a great solo on a tune with changes similar to "Stella By Starlight". 'East*West' includes: Kevin on trumpet, Mike Murley on tenor sax, Ed Bickert on guitar, Steve Wallace on bass, and Barry Elmes on drums. It is available on the Cornerstone label.
