Holt Cemetery
Holt cemetery is one of the only (the only?) below-ground cemetery in New Orleans. It's primarily for people who can't afford an above-ground tomb. The memorials are homemade and very personal. I saw several veterans who's families had been given a standard tombstone but not enough money for a standard burial. The graves are sometimes bordered by wood or pieces of cement with the government headstone in the center.
Holt is the most emotional of the New Orleans cemeteries. You can connect with the people who are buried here. It's hard to find, even though it's right near the Metarie cemeteries. The place was entirely deserted the whole time I was there. There are large Cypress trees that add serenity to the site.
