Online Since 1996: An Overview of "Carnival" as celebrated in the city distinguished as "Mother of Mystics." |

Excellent Site: The "resurrected" Cowbellions provide clarification to historical facts while sharing pictures and information of their customs, traditions and revels. |

An Outstanding Site: Joe Cain, or "Slacabamorinico (often spelled Slackabamirimico), a Chickasaw Indian," a.k.a "Slac", in the annuals of history revived "Mardi Gras" in 1866 after the conclusion of the War Between the States. The revival, of course, was in defiance of Union troops occupying the port city (as in most occupied southern cities, the residents took great delight in taunting the troops and carpetbaggers at every given opportunity; the genteel folk of Charleston did somewhat the same thing with their Saint Cecilia Celebration). Old "Slac" and six of his fellow Confederate veterans created a ruckus, referred to in the "Mother City of Mystics" as "Raisin Cain"...........This "Site" chronicles "Joe Cain" and the California "Mardi Gras Sunday" celebration based on the "myths, legends, traditions, and historical facts of the Mobile Joe Cain Day celebration." |

Highlighted is the "Mistick Krewe of Comus", New Orleans' oldest secret society, established in 1857 by six members of Mobile's "Cowbellion de Rakin Society" (established 1830; resurrected 1989). Mobile's oldest "active" Society, the "Order of Myths (OOM's)," established in 1867, is accorded the distinguished honor of presenting the final Carnival Season parade on Mardi Gras night; "Comus" has the distinguished honor of presenting New Orleans' final Carnival Season "Street Procession" from the French Quarter to their Mardi Gras Ball. |
