The Off family came to the US from Germany during the Palatine immigration of 1709-10. Hans Jacob came with his wife, Maria Magdelena Nussbaum and their children. Soon after arriving Hans Jacob died and possibly also one of the children. Around this time the family name was inadvertently changed to Eoff, and has continued as such ever since. The family settled in Pluckemin, Somerset Co., NJ, where they became innkeepers. Soon after his death, Hans Jacob's widow married Peter Castner.
