Ahnentafel Chart for William LIGON

First Generation

1. William LIGON was born in Henrico Co VA. He died 1689 in Henrico Co VA.
The will states that children are to be under care of wife until age 21 unless she marry and then only to age 16.
William Ligon made it clear that his wife was in charge of everything during her widowhood.
If she married 3 of the best business men in the county would be watching every move made on the Ligon estate.

William married Mary TANNER, daughter of Joseph TANNER and Mary BROWN before 1 Apr 1679 in Henrico Co VA.
Mary was born about 1655 in Henrico Co VA. She died after 1707.

Second Generation

2. Thomas LIGON Lt.Col. was born 11 Jan 1623/1624 in Walsgrave-on-Sowe, Co. Warwick, England
and was christened in Warwickshire, England. He died 15 Mar 1675 in Henrico Co VA. Thomas married Mary HARRIS
about 1648 in Henrico Co, VA.

"Colonel Thomas Ligon, the founder of the Ligon family in the New World, accepted his portion of his
father's estate in England and came to Jamestown in 1641, with his near kinsman, Sir William Berkeley,
    Royal Governor of Virginia.
He had full knowledge of the history of the illustrious family from which he descended, and evidently realized
that his success or failure in life in the new surroundings depended entirely upon his own efforts and ability
to win in the face of adverse conditions....From a standpoint of hardship and deprivation in an effort toward
colonization, the history of this peiorid has been handed down as not being equalled at any time, in any other
    part of the world."

The Royal Descents of 500 Immigrants to the Amer. Colonies, by Gary Boyd Roberts, 1993, p 204.

Thomas was baptized 11 Jan 1623/4 at Walsgrave-on-Sowe as "of Caludon." Sowe Parish register.
The fact that young Thomas was a cousin both to the Lord Berkeley and to Governor (Sir) William Berkeley
[Margery (Lygon) Berkeley, the Governor's paternal grandmother was the eldest daughter of William and
Eleanor (Dennis) Lygon] go far to explain the patronage which brought him to Virginia.
John Smyth, of Nibley, The Lives of the Berkeleys... v. 1, p. 261; v.2, p.184.

At the time of Thomas Ligon's immigration, the total number of English in the colony did not exceed 350 white
    settlers.
"He was a Lieut. Colonel in the Indian Wars. On April 18, 1644, the Indians made a sudden attack upon the
settlements in VA, and massacred about 300 of the colonists before they were repulsed. While this furious
attack was in progress, Col. Thomas Ligon who happended to be passing at the moment the residence of
Dr. John Woodson, helped Sara Woodson defend her home against the Indians. The only weapon they had was an
old gun which Col. Ligon handled with deadly effect.
At the first fire he killed 3 Indians, and two at the second shot. The holwing mob on the outside took fright
and fled but Col Ligon fired the third time and killed two more, making seven in all. The old gun which
rendered such valuable service on that dreadful day, was made in England and is now in the possession of the
    Virginia Historical Society. "

Prerogative Court of Canterbury, Admon. Act. Book 1625-27, p.133 (VA Gen., Jan.

Stoke and Walsgrave-on-Sowe are suburban parishes to the City of Coventry while Caludon was part of the ancient parish of St.
    Michael's, Coventry.
    by deposition in 1621.
The administration on his estate was granted his relict Elizabeth Feb.
16, 1626/27. He was buried as "Mr. Thomas Ligon from Stoke".
The marraige refers to Mr. Tomas Liggins and Elizabeth Pratt from Caludon.
Given the short time between the marriage and the birth of the son Thomas (less than 5 months)
Neil Thompson in his article in Virginia Genealogists states that it is likely that Elizabeth Pratt
had been a housekeeper or maidservant for Thomas Lygon and was impregnated by him.

5. Elizabeth PRATT was born 10 Oct 1602 in Stoke-Biggin, Co. Warwick, England.
She died 19 Aug 1631 in Sowe, Co Warwick England and was buried 19 Aug 1631 in Walsgrave-on-Sowe, Co. Warwick, England.

"Between the Jamestown settlement in 1607 and the muster of 1624/25 around 7,200 brave souls made the voyage to Virginia. The muster showed that only 1,232 were living in 1625. Six out of seven had died of disease, starvation or had been killed by the Indians. Of the survivors only 109 left descendants that could be traced through three generations."
In 1611, the population of Virginia was less than 350 on the James and about 12 pesons at Old Point Comfort. Thomas Harris arrived on the Prosperous. Thomas Harris paid 25 lbs to the Second Virginia company in January and November 1609. Sir Thomas Dale with his charter as Governor of Virginia sailed from Land's end in England March 27, 1611 with three ships, The Star, Prosperous, and Elizabeth, carrying 300 people and this fleet anchored at Fort Algernon, now Old Point Comfort, May 22, 1611. It made the crossing in less than 60 days which was good sailing in those times. The Prosperous arrived in England on its return trip on november 13, 1611.
    NOTE:
Thomas Harris was a Capatain in the Charles City regiment in 1623, against the Indians, and was 2nd in command to Captain Thomas Osborne in an expedition in 1627.

7. Adria GURGANY was born about 1598. She died before 11 Sep 1626 in Henrico Co VA.
It is known that she died before that date because on 9/11/1626 a general court held that
"Rebecka Graye sware and examineth, sayeth that ye good wife Wright did tell this deponent
that she told Thomas Harris he should bury his first wife being then bethrothed unto him, which
    came to pass."
Prophecy in those days if fullfilled usualy resulted in a complaint for witchcraft.
She is listed as being an ancient planter on land grant records which means that she arrived before April 1616.
She was not listed among the maids when returning on the Marmeluke (Marmaduke) in Nov. 1621 from a visit in England
where she probably left her oldest children due to the hardships in Virginia.
She is listed in 1638 by Tho Harris, Capt ( her husband) Henrico Co.
This must be a second return trip from England. This is a contradiction since she supposedly died in 1629 or so.

Fourth Generation

8. Thomas LYGON was born about 1545 in Worchester Co, Eng and was christened in Res.In Elkstone, Gloucestershire, England. He died 1603 in Elstone, Wiltshire, Eng and was buried 14 Aug 1603 in Elkstone, Gloucester, England. Thomas married Frances DENNIS about 1577 in Callendowne.

REF: The Royal Descents of 500 Immigrants to the Amer. Colonies, by Gary Boyd Roberts, 1993, p 204.
This approximate date was given on line (1556). I have modified it to reflect acceptable generations.
This was as "Francisca Ligon ux' Thomas Ligon nuper de Elkeston, gen."

10. Dennis (Dionis) PRATT was born about 1560 in England. He died before 21 Jul 1614.

Denis or Dionis will proved 21 July 1614, Stoke Parish, City of Coventry left everthing to his
wife Ann "to bring up the children." Consistory Court of Lichfield, Original wills, 1614.
The will undated but proven in July 1614 left everything to his wife Ann "to bring up the children".
The estate was a small one and "it appears that Elizabeth Pratt was well below the station of her husband,
for she is not called "Mrs." at marraige, at burial or in her estate proceedings."

11. Ann was born about 1560.

He was a member of the expedition of 1616 which was sent against the Chickahominies to collect much needed corn.

Someone on line gave me the date of about 1556. This has to be wrong because the generations don't work out.
I have substituted what seems a more reasonable date.
