A brief history of Trevathan



The Trevathans were an old and important family in Cornwall, England.

A good many of the Cornish men were miners and were known the world over as "The Cornish Jacks". They were usually the first to be hired because they worked hard and were dependable. When the mining played out in Cornwall, many families left their homeland to find work in America, Australia, New Zealand, and other places as well.

The earliest known Trevathan/Trevethan who came to the United States eastern shores was William, who came as a surveyor of commodities in the Virginia area. He arrived on the Recovery ship ca 1679. This line has been researched from William on down to the present.

John Trevathan, born ca 1780 in Richland County, South Carolina, was probably a close relative of this William. John married Rhoda Leander and they had several children, shown below. John served in the War of 1812, and later they moved to Pike County, Alabama, then on to Sumter County, AL.

The eldest son, Eli Trevathan, was killed in 1836. John was killed in 1838 in Sumter County. Some of his sons followed the killer all the way to Trinity County, Texas, where the killer's horse was seen at an Indian Camp on Alabama Creek. The Indians said the man had been there but had died of a fever. The sons liked Texas, so they went back home, packed up and headed for Texas.

Some of the family apparently stopped for awhile in Louisiana. In 1840 Rhoda Trevathan was shown in Union Parish with Rhody, probably a younger son or grandson. Some of Rhoda's children apparently stayed there, but Rhoda and Thomas Leander, her younger son, came on to Texas in 1841. Rhoda took up residence in Angelina County, Texas, but Thomas Leander lived out his life in Trinity County, Texas. He fought for the south in the War between the States. The village of Trevat Texas is named for this Trevathan family.

You may read all about this Trevathan family in the "TREVATHAN FAMILY HISTORY", which was published in November, 1996. This book covers John & Rhoda Leander Trevathan, ca 1780- 1996, has over 2000 names, 600 surnames, plus 250 Trevathan surnames. The book is currently out of print.

JOHN AND RHODA LEANDER TREVATHAN'S CHILDREN:



1. ELIZA ANN TREVATHAN, (probably a daughter) b 17 Jun 1803, d 21 Oct 1874, possibly in Louisiana. (Memorial stone in Union Parish, LA) She was m to John Parish possibly before the census was taken, since she was not included in her parents home. She named her oldest daughter Rhody, apparently after her mother, Rhoda Leander Trevathan; and her oldest son Robert Trevathan Parish (1820-1885), who was a Methodist Circuit Rider of Louisiana.

6. ELIZABETH TREVATHAN, b ca 1814, m Thomas Anderson, who probably lived and died in Louisiana.

7. SARAH JANE TREVATHAN, b ca 1817 in SC, m Alfred Rawlette in Sumter Conty, AL.

8. THOMAS LEANDER TREVATHAN, b 15 Nov 1820, m Sarah "Sena" Roberta Gallion and they both died in Trinity County. They are the great grandparents of Ruth Trevathan Delvige.

9. SON b ca 1822 in Alabama, no proof.

TREVATHAN (etc.) WHO MIGRATED TO AMERICA:

ELISHA TREVETHAN born 5-10-1848 in Camden, Cornwall, England he died 1-31-1922 in Leadville, Lake CO, CO. He was married to a Rebecca Jane Hewitt born 2-26-1860 in French speaking, Canada. She died 1-30-1934 in Leadville, Lake CO, CO. (Submitted by: Sheree' & Darren Belanger )

MICHAEL TREVETHAN, was granted United States Citizenship at Silver Bow County, Montana on Oct. 5, 1894, having proved residence in the United States for at least five years, and renounced loyalty to: Victoria, Queen of Great Britain & Ireland & Empress of India.(Ruth Delvige)

RICHARD TREVETHAN, was granted United States Citizenship at Silver Bow County, Montana on September 29, 1884, having proved residence in the United States for at least five years, and renounced loyalty to: Victoria, Queen of Great Britain & Ireland & Empress of India. The obituary of Richard Trevethen in the Nov. 3, 1932 Montana Stadard at Butte, Montana, states he wa s aa miner, and died Nov. 2, and that he was a native of England. He was survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Trevethen, a son, Percy, and three brothers and one sister in Michigan. (Ruth Trevathan Delvige)

WILLIAM TREVATHAN, came as a surveyor of commodities in the Virginia area. He arrived on the Recovery ship ca 1679. This line has been researched from William on down to the present to several generations. (Ruth Delvige)
