We Need A Hero

by thebaglady, Prose Investigator

This page is dedicated to my Heroes

We cannot be a country of
rich people who have no responsibility to
those less fortunate –
Selfish ambition will run rampant if Americans
choose this as our way of life.
We need a hero.

We cannot be a country where there is not a
good living wage for people who work hard –
That will exhaust and embitter our dwindling
working middle class. It may eliminate our
middle class.
We need a hero.

We cannot be a country who turns our backs on
the poor and unable,
the elderly –
We must help anyone who needs help
regardless of why they need it – that is our responsibility
as ethical people.
We need a hero!

Have we already become a nation of
Haves and Have-nots?
(of Snots and Snot-nots?)
“The economy is very good” spin is the lingo
of Haves People. It’s a lie.
It seems to me ‘Haves’ have become indifferent,
selectively blind, and smug
in their rose-colored havens.
We need a hero!

I’m not sure a president can solve America’s problems.
However, it sure would be nice to have one who recognizes
what our problems are,
who has some genuine compassion
for those of us not as fit
as the fittest of us…which is why
we need a hero.

But there are no heroes at the gate.
Few mature men want to be the
Daddy or husband these days, and
Women-who-Have seem to think
acrylic fingernails, the right clothes, and big houses
is where life begins and ends.

Young male ‘Haves’ seem to want
boats, no responsibility, perfect teeth, and
BMW’s…
Young female ‘Haves’ seem to want
fingernails, boobs, perfect teeth, and
BMW’s…

All the above want fat paychecks
for doing as little as possible, of course…
God forbid they get a wrinkle
or have to drive a used car !!!
(They want to be independently wealthy
forever…)

One thing for sure about these pretty people
is
they do not produce heroes…
never have, never will.
Yet they are the people in America today
who can afford to run for political office,
who do run for political office.
Nope, they don’t need heroes.
They just need money and more money,
scissors haircuts and BMW’s.

Does that give you the creeps?
It gives me the creeps –
Which is why I continue to write for
people who have no mouth and cannot scream,
whose teeth are rotting, who weigh too much,
who have no health insurance…
who do not dream about BMW’s…
who have nightmares about getting really sick…
who dream about heroes!

Oh, I know, I know…you’re going to drag JFK out
Of his eternal flame closet and dangle him before me…
Maybe Roosevelt…call him a hero!
Tell me they ‘understood the people’…hold them up as
Rich and pretty people who were heroes,
as in tee-hee, or tra-la…
You’re missing the point…

Yeah, yeah…next you’ll try to convince me
Donald Trump’s hairdo proves he’s a human being, or
that George Bush understands rotting teeth and
no health insurance.
I can stomach that about as much as I can
eat canned beans three times a day!
We need a hero!

Sorry folks, I don’t want rich people,
prettypeople presidents.
I’ve had it with slicktalking jerks and greedy,
self-indulgent hoots.
If I am forced to choose one of these,
(because that’s all I have on a ballot),
I will vote for Al Gore.
At least he has a bald spot
no acrylic or BMW can cover up.

No, that won’t make me happy…
especially when he’s surrounded by
hordes of ‘Haves’ in office
in the Senate and House.
Lord, sure would be nice
to have a hero…
We want a hero!

I fell for this prettypeople line myself for years –
I confess I stooped once for a couple weeks
to the acrylic fingernail lure.
Gads, I was so stupid once I even bought a
Yellow MG (and racing gloves…)!!!
I’m ashamed to admit I own a gold necklace.

The prettypeople sickness is very seductive.
My worst personal mistakes were caused by
greed, self-indulgence, and pride.
I am ashamed of those days, and
ashamed of what they did to me,
and those around me.
They did not make me a better person or a kinder person.
They made me my worst self,
a person I could not admire or abide.

One day I saw this prettypeople disease for what
It really is. It’s ugly, unkind, and mean.
It’s mean-spirited and elite.
Since then, I try my best to not be blind and deaf again.
I didn’t like being a prettypeople somehow.
I didn’t like somebody had to be ugly for me to be pretty.
It just wasn’t what I wanted to be when I grew up, and
the pressure and stress is incredible.
Do we need more pressure, more STRESS????
No,we need a hero!
