1 package dry yeast
1/2 cup lukewarm water
3/4 cup shortening
5 cups self-rising flour
2 cups buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 tablespoons sugar
Dissolve yeast in water. Cut shortening into flour.
Combine buttermilk and soda. Add buttermilk, sugar, and
yeast to flour mixture. Place in airtight container and
refrigerate. Will keep for several days. Take out amounts
as needed. Roll dough on floured cloth, 1/2 to 1 inch thick.
Cut with a biscuit cutter. Bake at 400° F. for 15 to 20 minutes.
