Born in Macon, MS, in 1935, singer/guitarist Eddy Harrington is a mainstay of the Chicago blues scene. His artist's name, of course, refers to Muddy Waters, but that doesn't mean Eddy's a Muddy Waters imitator.

Another own composition, from tthe CD "Help Yourself" (Blind Pig Records).
BIG TIME GAMBLER (E. Harrington) I'm a big time gambler That's why I'm always on the move I'm a big time gambler That's why I'm always on the move Always tryin' my best to win But somehow or other always lose Started gamblin' Friday night Just as soon as I got paid But before the game was over I lost every dime I made I say I'm a big time gambler I've got Las Vegas in my veins And when it comes to races Bettin' on horses is my thing (that's why I've always got the blues) Like most big time gamblers You know they've always got the blues Just like most big time gamblers You know they've always got the blues You know they never stop gamblin' Until they lose their socks and shoes
From the CD "Boogie My Blues Away" (released by Delmark in 1995; recorded in 1977). Written by Eddy Harrington (i.e. Eddy Clearwater).
I came up the hard way, I had to work both night and day I came up the hard way, I had to work both night and day It's a shame, shame, shame, that a poor man have to live this way I came up the hard way, they kept me workin' from sun to sun I came up the hard way, they kept me workin' from sun to sun Well it seems somehow or another, that a poor man's work ain't never done Well my mother sat down and told me, she said Son, don't forget the golden rule My mother sat down and told me, she said Son, don't forget the golden rule I had to go head-on and deal with it yes I did, cause I didn't get, I didn't get too far in school I came up the hard way, I had to work both night and day I came up the hard way, I had to work both night and day Ain't it a shame, ain't it a shame, that a poor man gotta live this way (guitar solo) My mother sat down and told me, she said Son, don't forget the golden rule My mother sat down and told me, she said Son, don't forget the golden rule That's all I had to deal with, because I didn't get too, too far in school (harmonica solo by Mack Simmons)
From the Delmark CD "Boogie My Blues Away", recorded in 1977. Eddy Clearwater is here referring to Mayor Richard J. Daley, who died in 1976 after 21 years in office (he was the longest serving mayor in Chicago's history; here's more info about him. Twenty-odd years later, it's Richard M. Daley who's running the show. So, disregarding the mention of president Carter, this song still has got some actuality...
I wished mayor Daley woulda had time to come out here and listen to these blues we're layin' down I wished mayor Daley woulda had time to come out here and listen to these blues we're layin' down I believe he woulda went down to the liquor commissioner and say, let's open up a blues club right downtown Everybody seems so down and out these days, seem like ain't nobody got no place to go Everybody seems so down and out these days, seem like ain't nobody got no place to go But I'm gonna play my blues all over this town, yes I am even if I have to play 'em from door to door I wished president Carter woulda had time to come out here and listen to these blues we're puttin' out I wished president Carter woulda had time to come out here and listen to these blues we're puttin' out I believe he would make up his mind say let's have some blues way up in the White House Everybody seems so down and out these days, seem like ain't nobody got no place to go Everybody seems so down and out these days, seem like ain't nobody got no place to go Well I'm gonna play my blues all over Chicago even if I have to play 'em from door to door I wish Mayor Daley would had time to come out here and listen to these blues we're layin' down I wish Mayor Daley would just had time to come out here and listen to these blues we're layin' down I believe he would've made up in his mind say let's have some blues clubs all over this town
From the Blind Pig CD "Help Yourself" (1992)
MESSED UP WORLD (E. Harrington) This is a crazy mixed up world People it seems like one great big curse This is a crazy mixed up world today People it seems like one great big curse Things gotta get better real soon Cause they can't hardly get much worse This is a cruel cruel cruel world You have to live in each and every day This is a cruel cruel cruel world You have to live in each and every day You can't hardly trust your next door neighbor Or they just might steal your life away You know I'm tryin' my best Just to send my kids to school But gangs and guns are takin' over That's why everybody's got the blues What a cruel cruel cruel world People it seems like one great big curse Things gotta get better real soon Cause they can't hardly get much worse
