This page contains lyrics to the following song(s):
This vaudeville-type song was written by Clarence Williams who accompanied Ethel Waters on the piano when she recorded it in New York in 1928. It was included on the CD "The Blues 1923 to 1933" in the "Jazz Classics in Digital Stereo" series from BBC Records.
A trifling man came home one night And tiptoed to his door To his despair, his little wifie was there Waitin' to lay down the law Said she, "I'm thru, I'm really sick of you Get out, stay out, and be on your way" Well he dropped down on his knees Cried "oh, please", But this is all she had to say: Get up, get up, off your knees papa You can't win me back that way Turn in, turn in all your keys papa You really goin' this time to stay I discovered that you're the worst man in this town Looks like you're fond of keepin' on going lower down Get up, get up, off your knees papa You can't win me back that way Get right up off your knees papa I'm tellin' you, you can't win me back that way Turn in all your keys papa Cause I put you out this time to stay You're so blamed crooked, here are blades Looks like it's a hard matter for you to keep your head up straight So get up off your knees papa You can't win me back that way Anyhow. Stand up when you're makin' your pleas No use you wearin' out your knees I heard someone say right next door Look mighty strange down there on all fours Stop it, down like that What in the devil anyhow can you be drivin' at? So get up and stay up off your knees papa You can't win me back that way - Besides it looks suspicious - And you can't win me back that way.
A Waters-Mitchell-Henderson composition. Recorded roundabout May 1922, with Joe Smith's Jazz Masters (Fletcher Henderson on piano) for Black Swan.
From CD Classics 796: The Chronological Ethel Waters, 1921-1923.
Sometimes I wonder, all times I ponder Why no one cares for me I'm one girl lonely, all by my only What I long for, is company But with all my pleadin', no one takes me seriously Some people doubt me, most talk about me Just to down my name Although Eve was the first to sin That don't say all women's the same But we must suffer and all times bear the blame All I want is real kind lovin' Someone to whisper lovin' words to me For I've been neglected, downright rejected Won't some sweet daddy hear my plea? Once let me love him, he'll like it I will guarantee For now it's up to some kind daddy One who is game enough to take the chance He'll not regret it, be glad to get it That real sweet good true kind lovin' Because I've got those kind lovin' blues (instrumental break) For now it's up to some kind daddy One who is game enough to take the chance Lord he'll not regret it, be glad to get it That real sweet good true kind lovin' Papa, mama got those kind lovin' blues
Ethel Waters recored this Clarence Williams composition on 23 August 1928 in New York. It's included on the CD "the chronological Ethel Waters: 1926-1929" on the French Classics label.

Organ grinder, organ grinder, Organ grinder, play that melody Take your organ, grinder, and grind some more for me Grind it north, grind it north, Grind it north, grind it east or west, But when you grind it slow, that's when I like it best Organ grinder, organ grinder, You don't have to pass your hat around any more Cause you're just the grinder I've been waitin' for Organ grinder, organ grinder, your sweet music seems to ease my mind It's not only your organ, but it's the way you grind Organ grinder, organ grinder, organ grinder, you've found that sweet lost chord Start grindin', and grind your room and board Organ grinder, organ grinder, Organ grinder, don't tell me you're through Cause if you want a little intermission, then mama's gonna grind a while for you Organ grinder, organ grinder, Organ grinder, I will give you anything you choose If you'll just cure my organ, of those grinding blues

They say don't change the old for the new But I found out that this will never do When you grow old, you don't last long You're just here my honey, then you're gone I loved a man for many years gone by I thought his love for me would never die He made a chance and said I would not do For now I'm gonna make some changes too Why there's a change in the weather, there's a change in the sea So from now on there'll be a change in me My walk will be different, my talk and my name Nothing about me's goin' be the same I'm gonna change my long tall one for a little short fat I'm gonna change my number where I'm livin' at Because nobody wants you when you're old and gray There'll be some changes made today There'll be some changes made Why there's a change in the weather, there's a change in the sea So from now on there'll be a change in me Why my walk will be different, my talk and my name Nothing about me gonna be the same I'm gonna change my way of living, and that ain't no bluff Why I'm thinkin' about changing the way I'm gonna strut my stuff Because nobody wants you when you're old and gray There'll be some changes made today There'll be some changes made
