ASSISTANT CAPTAIN: Each team is allowed no more than two Assistant Captains who are accorded the privileges of Captain if the Captain is not on the ice. The Assistant Captain wears an "A" on their jersey to denote this designation.

BACKCHECKING: Checking an opponent in your defending zone.

BOARDING: Violently checking an opponent into the boards. Illegal and Calls for a Penalty.

BODY CHECK: Slowing or stopping an opponent with the puck by using hip or shoulder. This is legal.

BREAKAWAY: No opponent between the puck carrier and the opposition's goal except the goalie.

BUTT-ENDING: To hit an opponent with the end of the stick farthest from the blade. Illegal and calls for a penalty.

CAPTAIN: The player designated as the team captain, denoted by the letter "C" on the jersey, has the privilege of discussing with the Referee any questions relating to the interpretation of rules during the course of the game.

CHARGING: Taking more than three strides before checking an opponent constitutes charging. Illegal and calls for a penalty.

CROSS-CHECKING: To hit an opponent with both hands on the stick and no part of the stick on the ice. Illegal and calls for a penalty.

DEKE: A quick move or feint by the puck carrier, who attempts to evade and fake out the opponent.

DROP PASS: Puck carrier leaves the puck behind to be picked up by a trailing teammate.

FACEOFF: The dropping of the puck between one player from each team to start play

FIVE-HOLE: The path the puck travels in the goal scored between the goalies legs.

FORECHECKING: Checking the opponent in his own zone.

FREEZING THE PUCK: Pinning the puck against the boards with either the skate and/or stick.

GAME MISCONDUCT: A Penalty called on an individual that disqualifies him for the rest of the game.

HAT TRICK: Three or more goals by a single player in a game.

HEAD-MANNING: When a player passes the puck forward to an attacking teammate.

HIGH STICKING: Carrying the stick above the shoulder level. If used against an opponent, it calls for penalty. No goal can be scored with a high stick hit above the shoulder level.

HOLDING: To use your hands on an opponent or his equipment. Illegal and calls for penalty.

HOOKING: To impede an opponent with the blade of your stick. Illegal and calls for penalty.

ICING THE PUCK: Shooting the puck from behind the center red line across the opponent's goal line. Legal only when icing team is shorthanded. Otherwise face-off is called deep in offender's zone.

INTERFERENCE: Body contact with an opponent not in possession of the puck (or the last man to have touched the puck). Also called for knocking an opponent's fallen stick out of his reach. Illegal and calls for penalty.

MAJOR PENALTY: A five-minute penalty. A major penalty is assessed for fighting as well as flagrant minor infractions, such as high-sticking, that result in injury.

MATCH PENALTY: Suspension for balance of the game.

MINOR PENALTY: A two-minute penalty. Minor penalties including holding, hooking, interference, delay of game, cross-checking, and high-sticking.

MISCONDUCT PENALTY: A 10-minute penalty called against an individual. Substitutes are permitted amd no team is on a power play. Called for insubordination or when a player incurs second major penalty in a game.

NEUTRAL ZONE: Center ice area between defending and attacking zones.

ONE-TIMER: An offensive player accepts a pass from a teammate and attempts a slap shot in the same motion.

OFF-SIDE: Called when an attacking player precedes the puck across the opponent's blue line. Illegal and calls for stoppage of play and a face-off. A two-line offside is called when an attacking player receives a pass across two lines.

PENALTY SHOT: A penalty shot is a one-on-one showdown between an offensive player and the goalie. Penalty shots are called when a player is fouled from behind and denied a breakaway scoring opportunity. They are also called for deliberately displacing the goal posts during a breakaway, or when a defending player other than the goalie falls on the puck.

POINT: A position just inside the opposition blue line usually manned by defensemen when their team is in control of the puck in the opposition's end.

POKE CHECK: To dislodge the puck from an opponent by stabbing at it with the blade of a stick. This is legal.

POWER PLAY: An all-out attempt to score. The team usually uses four forwards and one defenseman in this situation.

ROUGHING: Minor fisticuffs or shoving. Illegal and calls for a penalty.

SCREEN SHOT: A shot the goalie has difficulty seeing because one or more players are between him and the shooter.

SLASHING: To swing a stick at an opponent. Illegal and calls for penalty.

SLOT: The area directly in front of the goal crease where many offensive opportunities take place.

SPEARING: To use a stick as one would a spear. Illegal and calls for a major penalty.

SWEEP CHECK: To use the entire length of the stick with a sweeping motion while laying it flat on the ice in order to dislodge the puck from the opponent. This is legal.

TOP SHELF: Placing the puck above either shoulder of the goalie in a scoring attempt.
