How did you like this website?|: | It is nice. |
Family war story/account:: | 2nd Corporal W. Shinhale; enlisted Sept 10, 1862, Estill County (This is
actually William Shimfessel. I think the page is wrinkled and that causes
the illusion and mispelling. William was injured in the war and spent his
remaining days at the Confederate Soldiers Home in Oldham County Kentucky.
William H. Harrison, James Harrison and Adam Harrison also enlisted and all three are brothers. William Harrison spent many years in the old confederate home in Oldham Co Ky and I have xerox copies of letters he wrote there. He came home to Estill County to his son's home a couple of months before he died. He is buried in the McDowell Cemetery next to his wife Millie Ann Mcdowell. Adam Harrison came back to Estill Co but then disappears from records. James Harrison came home and raised his family. He got a pension and eventually moved out of state and lost his pension since he moved out of state. His wife was unable to collect it as well since he left. William Tyra, misspelled his name is actually William Tyre. I have other items I can share with you but there is no e-mail address. I have newpaper abstracts about these men and and a photo of the old confederate home. Contact me if you wish to have these. |

How did you like this website?|: | Good |
Family war story/account:: | My great-grandfather James Goble (also spelled Gobble) of Prestonsburg, KY, was in the 14th Kentucky Cavalry and was therefore also one of Morgan's Men. He fought at Cynthiana and was still with the regiment when (according to General Basil Duke's account) the men were furloughed at Christiansburg, VA. Some declined the furloughs and marched south to link up with Jefferson Davis' escort, but James Goble was not among them. He managed to get home without surrendering to Union troops. |
Other Comments: | I'm looking for a Samuel Rhodes (Rodus, Rhodus, Rodes) who may have been
in the 11th Cavalry. He is the grandfather of a good friend. I checked your
company roster page, but could not pull it up on my computer. I hadn't heard the music to "Ridin' a Raid" before, but it has a very Scottish flavor to it. Sounds like it may predate the Civil War and even the USA. |

Family war story/account:: | I am not certain whether or not I am ancestor, however, I am interested in trying to find out as I know very little of my father's family history. My father's name was Charles F McCreary and he was born and raised in eastern Ohio. His mother was Frances Friend McCreary and I think his father's name was James. As far as I know, James was an attorney. James and Frances separated when my father was very very young, and for this reason I know very little about him. My father was diabetic and died of complications of diabetes at age 57, in 1982. Any help or other information you could provide would be very much appreciated. |

How did you like this website?|: | very interesting |
Other Comments: | Our family has the name Deatherage listed as the oldest recorded family name. Under that name is the word slave owner. My maiden name is Ferrell. I find all this so coincidental and exciting, since both my mother and dad were from Richmond, KY. There were also 3 Chenault boys that married into my grandmother's family, probably sometime just before WWI. We are African-Americans. |

the 32nd Georgia Infantry. I'm also looking for information on a J.M. Clough, CSA and a Lt. Col. McKinney who were camped at Camp Alcorn near Hopkinsville, Kentucky near the beginning of the Civil War. I have a camp pass and note signed by J. M. Clough and Lt. Col. McKinney while they were camped at Camp Alcorn near Hopkinsville, Kentucky that are in a Civil War Scrapbook I inherited that was assembled by a girl by the name of Caroline (Carrie) Dillard who eventually married a J. Family war story/account:: | The Battle of Tebb's Bend was fought near my G-G Grandparents farm. I inherited a cavalry sword from a soldier killed at Green River Bridge. I believe the sword to be Confederate and am trying to find the names of all those killed at the Battle of Green River Bridge (Tebb's Bend) July 4, 1863, ironicly the same day as the Battle of Gettysburg. If anyone knows where I might research a casualty list from the Battle of Green River please drop me an email, Thanks! |
Other Comments: | After beginning my research into this family Civil War heirloom, I am truely touched by the magnitude of the horror that this country endured during this war. Never should we forget the sacrifice so many make in any war. |

Family war story/account:: | 2nd Lt.Wm W. Baldwin Jr. was my Great great grandfather. He was killed at Green River Bridge July 4, 1863. He joined with his father (Wm W. Baldwin, Sr) and other Baldwins. Some were brothers and others maybe cousins. I have a letter which says that Wm. W. Baldwin, Sr was born in England in 1800. When he went to war he took with him 2 or 3 "black servants". He must not have served long, becasue I have not found any type of discharge on him. He was a bit old to be doing a lot of fighting. Maybe he was at Green River Bridge and had enough. |

Family war story/account:: | I'm able to go back as far as my great, great, great, grandfather who
was William Chenault, born 1790, in Va. I beleave he was married twice. His
oldest son from his first marrage was Edward P. Chenault, born 1818, in Va.
I figure I must be a 3rd or 4th cousin to Col. David Waller Chenault. I'm calling on all of you Chenault's out there to please come give me a hand in trying to find out more info on my 3rd great grandfather William Chenault. The last census he appears in is a Pike Co., Ohio census, showing him as head of household at 60 years old. He is married to an Eliza A.?,52 years old, from Va. and has Edward P. Chenault, age 32, and single living with him along with 3 younger sons, 21, 18, and 15 years old from Va. A female named Mary J. ?, age 22, from Ohio, also living with them but I am assuming she is wife of the 21 year old son. If anyone out there has more information on William Chenault, born 1790, in Va., please e-mail me. I have exhausted all of my efforts to find out more on him without getting in to expenses for records that states should have available to the public anyway. haha I'm sure if i can learn more about William, i will be able to easily connect the last couple great greandfathers and complete my family lineage. I am trying my best to have this done and get all my records turne in to the Chenault Family Assoc., so our lineage can be added into the new familt "RED BOOK", due to be out in 2004. This will be a whole new lineage for all family members to see and it may give opportunity for members to locate lost relatives and reunite. All help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Keep up the great work ! Your site looks great ! |

Family war story/account:: | Robert C. Little (my 2nd great-grandfather) b. ca. 1834 Jackson County, VA d. 20 September, 1890 Meigs County, Ohio buried: Fisher Cemetery, Cheshire Twp. Ohio Civil War Marker With a wife and two small children, at a time of much unrest in our country, Robert C. Little, went to war. Enlisting in Company C of the 9th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry he served the Union Army in the Civil War. At the same time, at least two of his brothers also enlisted, Mark and Willis Little. Mark and Willis both served in Company F in the 9th WV Vol. Inf. Robert served 14 months before receiving a medical discharge because of illnesses contracted during his service. He contracted measles in Guyandotte, Virginia in February, 1862. In his own words, “ I took the measles at Guyandotte, Va. and was in a old mill that the water was up on the flore and i took cold an and i lost my spech for a long time and i lost my hearing in my wright ear and cant sit and it left a disease on my lungs.” -Declaration for Invalid Pension, July 18, 1887. On the 16th day of July, 1862 Robert contracted rheumatism and was sent to a hospital in Charleston. Nine days later, while he lay in the hospital, his brother was taken prisoner at Summerville, Va. Mark’s company was surprised by Rebel Cavalry, July 25, 1862 in Camp at Summerville. Many of the men were captured. For four months, Mark was absent from the muster roll for this reason. In November, he had returned. Robert remained in the hospital until he received a certificate of disability and was released in February of the next year. |
Other Comments: | I am searching for ancestory of Confederate soldiers who were captured
at Coal Hill in Ohio and briefly held at Cheshire, OH. Cheshire Village was
purchased by a power company for $20 million. Many of the residents are
moving because of pollution generated by the plant. Some are staying and a
recent vote has protected the village government, for now. It is our fear
that the population will continue to dwindle until the village no longer has
the capitol to operate if they are not allowed to annex. I set aside my personal genealogy a couple of years ago to research the history of the village that my family hails from. After the announcement of the sale, the historical society asked me to write a history of the village for their new history book that will be published and available soon. I did finish that and we are currently working on other projects to record the history of this little village. I would like to include information about the soldiers captured there too. Any information that one of their descendants would like to include is fine. You may put your name on it and any other personal information about yourself that you would like to include. I will place the information in a file at the historical society and keep copies for future projects, with the individuals permission. The historical society is a non-profit organization. Money made from any project goes back in to the society to fund other historical projects and publications in the area. I will share information about the village to anyone that is interested in return. Thanks so much for all of your hard work! |

Family war story/account:: | Rodney Haggard; teacher, soldier, sheriff, lawyer, judge and Ky. State
Senator, was born October 3, 1844, in Clark County, Ky. At the age of 17 he
began teaching. When the war between the states broke out he dismissed his school and joined the Buckner Guards in Kirby Smith's command. He was a recruiting officer and raised a company, of which his uncle, Gordon C. Mullins, was elected captain, and himself lieutenant. This was the first company raised for Chenault's regiment of John H. Morgan's command, and Judge Haggard was with this command until Gen. Morgan was captured in the Ohio raid, at which time he was in command of the remnant of the regiment, all his superior regimental officers having been killed, wounded or captured. He was then a prisoner on Johnson's Island until the close of the war. During his active service in the army he took part in a number of engagements, among which were the battles of Richmond,KY; Hartsville, Tenn.; Green River Bridge, Mills Spring, West Liberty, Lebanon, and a number of of fights in Indiana and Ohio, and in fact was in all of the battles in which Morgan's command was engaged during his service with it. When he was released from prison at the end of the war he had not yet reached his 21st birthday. The above is extracted from "Geneaology and History of The Haggards 1433 to 1899" Published in 1899 |
Other Comments: | The Kentucky Squirrel rifle (cap and ball muzzle loader)that my Granduncle took into the war with him has been passed down through my mother to me and has now been passed on to my son. I am glad to be able to provide him with the history of the gun and it's original owner. |

Family war story/account:: | The report of Andrew Jackson Bruner's death in 1863 is inaccurate. He was married 3 times but only had children by the first and second marriage. First marriage was to Sarah Elizabeth Baker before 1855, second to Mary Jane Lisle the widow of Wooden Haggard, and finally to Mary E. Hisle in 1880. The third marriage ended by divorce. A.J.(he was called Jackson) moved to Vernon Cty, Missouri in 1883. He died in Montevallo in 1899 and is buried there in the churchyard next to the Baptist church where he was a member. The child by the first marriage, Ella, died with her mother and are buried in the Haggard Cem. In Clark Cty. Tuley Martin (f),Mary Jane (f) and Marcus Lisle (m) moved to Missouri with their father. |
Other Comments: | Newspaper accounts in Montevallo, Nevada Cty, Missouri called him Captain Bruner and recounted his injuries at Greasy Creek. |
