Organization

On 10th September 1862, Richmond, Kentucky mustered into the Confederate service as the 7th Kentucky Cavalry. Later changed designation to the 11th Kentucky Cavalry due to Col. Richard Gano's regiment was also named the 7th Cavalry. During Morgan's Indiana-Ohio Raid, most of regiment captured at Buffington Island, Ohio on July 19th 1863. Lt. Col. McCreary, after his paroll, returned to command the remnant of the regiment which had merged 10th Nov 1864 into the 3rd Special Cavalry Battalion, composed of both Kentuckians and South Carolina troops. Assigned to duty in Virginia under Gen. Breckinridge, where they fought more engagements and served as scouts. Following Lee's surrender, the regiment returned to Lexington, Kentucky where the men were paroled and disbanded.
