WALDO WEATHERS & |
For Saxophone lovers, remember when Applebee's on Elliston Place was THE place to be every Wednesday night? That's when Waldo Weathers and his act, Saxual Fulfillment packed in the college crowd! Kentucky-born Weathers and his band gave diners and listeners saxophone music in a variety of styles and from a number of eras. Weathers is originally from Louisville, Kentucky, where he began playing sax at the age of 12. Playing soul music from a young age at local clubs, Weathers says he learned to "duck out of fights real fast." Playing the music of James Brown and other soul greats of the time, Weathers began perfecting his instrument and earning a name for himself. At the time, jazz great David Sanborn was a big influence on him, but ironically, it was a conversation with country sax man Boots Randolph that took his career into a whole new direction. "I have to give Boots a lot of credit," says Waldo, "He probably doesn't remember me, but he's the one who told me I should get into country music." Which he did. And for much of the eighties, Waldo became known as the only black sax player in country music. After moving to Nashville from Louisville, Weathers moved to Arlington, Texas. After relocating to Texas, Weathers did a lot of club work in country venues, and eventually signed on as back up vocalist and sax player for country artist Charley Pride. He also cut an instrumental album himself, which contained a cover of Kenny Rogers' 1979 smash, "She Believes In Me", and "Tuff", an old Ace Canon song which hit the pop charts in 1962. Waldo also worked with country/blues artist Delbert McClinton, New Birth and others. |
He says,"It was a real jump, though. The rhythm is real different. The first time I sat in with a country group was in Nashville--it was a couple of guys I went to high school with who'd come to town for a while. I was freaked out, but it was interesting."
Weathers is now back in Nashville, and has appeared in several videos, including Hank Williams Jr.'s "Hotel Whiskey". The band members range in number from two to ten depending on the occasion. The band has built up quite a following through regular gigs at Mere Bulles, Applebee's and other clubs. Saxual Fulfillment's repertoire is now mostly classic soul music of the sixties, seventies, and eighties, as well as lite jazz and some country, upon request.
