Later in life, he moved to Texas to continue his music. It was there that Weathers recorded his first single, "She Believes in Me" (also a Kenny Rogers hit), written by Local 257 member Steve Gibb.
Upon hearing the playback, the session engineer said,"if that ain't country, I don't know what is."This is when Weathers sought out country groups and soon became known as Waldo, the Country Sax". Since then, for many years, he has billed himself as the only black sax man in country music circles.
The Country Music Foundation Library and Media Center in 1983, easily acknowledged Boots Randolph and Ace Cannon as country saxophone players - both white. As far as the Foundation knows, however, Weathers is the nation's only black country sax player. The Nashville instrumentalist has long enjoyed this distinction.
During his Texas connection, Weathers worked with several bands in the Lone Star State. He also played shows with Charley Pride, Delbert McClinton and New Birth. Weathers credits Boots Randolph as being a prime inspiration, and the main man who encouraged him to play country sax.
Currently, Waldo Weathers' S-A-X-U-A-L Fulfillment is available to work anything from a two-piece to 13 piece band that includes more saxes and strings to augment a rhythm section.
