PENNSYLVANIA RECORDS ONLINE

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission recently announced the placement of over 200,000 Revolutionary War, Spanish American and World War I digital records on ARIAS, Pennsylvania's Archives Records Information Access System. ARIAS is available on PHMC's Internet website at http://www.phmc.state.pa.us .

Currently online is the Revolutionary War Military Abstract Card File, the World War I Service Medal Application Card File and the Spanish American War Veterans' Card File of United States Volunteers. In the next phase of extractions PHMC plans to upload over 300,000 additional digital images of Pennsylvania's Civil War Veterans Card File and the Mexican War Campaign Veteran's Card File.

The Revolutionary War Card File is arranged alphabetically by
the surname of each soldier and contains information on service in the Pennsylvania Militia, Pennsylvania Line, and the Navy. It also includes the name and rank of soldier whether he was on active or inactive duty, his county of residence, military unit, officers and more.

ARIAS is designed to facilitate free citizen access to archival records created by all branches and levels of Pennsylvania State Government. Eventually, millions of digitized records, ranging from 19th-century county birth, death and marriage dockets to collections of photographs illustrating every aspect of the Pennsylvania experience, will be added.

Also on the PHMC Homepage is a searchable database to all historical markers in the State of Pennsylvania. Each marker in the state is searchable by their county of location, the title of the marker, by keywords or by category. Information for each historical marker includes the marker title, location, text and other pertinent information such as the date it was posted.
