"BRICKWALL" BOOK IN WORKS

  Family Chronicle Magazine is making an appeal to genealogists by asking them to share their "brickwall" solutions. Family Chronicle hopes to gather 1,000 stories for their anticipated book which they have tentatively titled 1,000 BRICKWALL SOLUTIONS.

 Writers whose articles are used in the publication will receive two free copies of the book for each article published. Those who submit serious articles which are not accepted for publication will receive a coupon good for a discount toward the purchase of the book. The book is expected to sell for around $25. At this time no publication date has been set.

 Submitted articles may be as short as 50 words and should not exceed 800 words. The submission should include a statement describing the brickwall problem and the traditional or creative solution used to solve it. Entries should include the author's name, mailing address and telephone number

 Articles should be sent to: "Brickwall Solutions" , Family Chronicle, Box 1201, Lewiston, NY 14092. Articles may, also, be submitted via email to ronwild@familychronicle.com . Include "Brickwall" in the subject line. .

  TSGS WRITING AWARDS 2000

 Each year the Texas State Genealogical Society conducts a writing contest for her members and partner societies. The first place award in each division is $50 while the top award of $300 is given to the best overall entry in any category.

 Submissions by individuals of family histories, reference books, such as county histories or county records, short manuscripts, magazine articles, journals, newsletters and family newsletters are welcome.

 Partner societies compete against one another's newsletters, quarterlies, journals and books. Individuals or partner societies may sponsor genealogical entries from elementary and/or secondary school students.

 Upon entering the writing contest, individuals must be a member of TSGS and a society must be a partner society. The deadline for submissions is September 15. CEMETERY TALK

 Paula Parke will address the Bear Creek Genealogical Society about Cemetery Searching: Answers From the Tombstones at 1 P.M. on Thursday August 10. The meeting will be held in the Bear Creek Community Center in Bear Creek Park just off Highway 6 in West Houston.

CZECHS MEET IN BRYAN

 Hosted by the Brazos Valley Chapter, the 4th Annual Czech Heritage Society of Texas Genealogy Conference will be held July 27-29 at the Brazos Center, 3232 Briarcrest Drive in Bryan.

 The conference will celebrate 150 years of Czechs in Texas with three days of intense genealogy and historical information. Twenty speakers from Texas and the Czech Republic will speak on topics concerning many aspects of Czech lifestyles, immigration to America and Texas,  preservation of documents and even taking a trip to the Czech Republic.

DOLLARHIDE IN AUSTIN

NEWS FROM THE BOOKSHELF

 History Magazine is a new publication published by Moorshead Magazines, Ltd, publishers of the popular bi-monthly magazine for genealogists, Family Chronicle Magazine. Like Family Chronicle, History Magazine is published six times a year and chock full of wonderful articles about all eras of history and on all kinds of subject matter.

 The subjects of articles in History Magazine offer real insight and background into the lives of our ancestors during all centuries. Most of the articles deal with some aspect of life, including the origins of inventions we now take for granted.

 There are articles on funeral practices, epidemics, contraception, lighthouses, refrigeration, travel, cleanliness and soap, and even histories of foods such as the potato and bread.

 Readers who would like to read a copy of History Magazine before subscribing may do so by logging on to the magazine's website at http://www.history-magazine.com. Once on the website the visitor will be instructed to complete a form telling the editors where to send the magazine. While online, be sure to read several of the articles from past issues posted for the perusal of surfing visitors.
