Ellsworth and Hicks

In 1999, after almost 20 years of playing their original songs all around the New York & New England area, E & H released their first CD,
"Ask Around". In 2000 it was picked as a finalist in the Crossroads Music Awards. Some of the tunes such as "Moonlight Over the Factories" and "But I'm Not" were already considered classics among their loyal fans. Others found their way to radio, internet and feature films. "The Moon is a Faithless Lover" was in the film "Ghetto Dawg" with Drena DeNiro and Gianna Palminteri. "The Things I Gotta Do to Stay Alive - Are Killing Me" was in "The Clinic," an independent film that won Best Screenplay in the NYII Film Festival. And "Up Above the World" was picked for the 2004 UMO Music: The 14 Best Singer/Songwriters of Greenwich Village compilation CD. And now, in 2007, E & H are still evolving their unique style, blending vocal harmonies with acoustic guitar and clarinet. With a repertoire that resists easy categorization and original songs strong enough to withstand the merely trendy, they continue to clear their own path.

"...what sets this pair apart is the casual way they come across as throwbacks to a time when songwriters sought to make some sense of the world, rather than settle for vocal acrobatics."
- Mike Wolf, Music Editor, Time Out NY

G.E. Smith & Taylor Barton

GE Smith          Taylor Barton pic
One of the most in-demand blues/rock guitarists in the world is a mysterious character who goes by the name of G.E. Smith. Millions of TV viewers know his face -- and the shock of unruly blond ponytail that was always falling across it - from his 10 years (1985-1995) of fronting the Saturday Night Live band. Or maybe you know him for his 6 years as lead guitarist for Hall & Oates; or for being the house band at Live Aid, backing Mick Jagger & Tina Turner; or for being Bob Dylan’s lead guitarist for 4 years. He’s worked with virtually everyone in the business and is now backing his wife, Taylor Barton, the multi-talented, singer-songwriter, writer, playwright, poet, dancer, and producer, on her new and critically acclaimed CD, Vapor. You may have seen her on Conan, Saturday Night Live, VH1, Bravo’s Broadway’s Best, After Breakfast, Mountain Stage, BET, World Cafe, Acoustic Cafe, WoodSongs, Westwood One Radio, House of Blues Radio, and/or WFUV.
She has also written five full-length plays which have been produced in NYC. She is the author of an award winning play,
The Eric Clapton Breakfast Club. Her debut novel Hotheaded Saints is in stores now.

"G.E. Smith uses his axemanship purely as a means of accenting the sultry singing of front woman Taylor Barton...She can wax poetic without slipping into pretense and slur sexily)...Smith's inventive arrangements and Barton's decidedly non-Hallmark phraseology...prove that quiet voices can still have plenty to say. — New York Newsday - David Sprague.

Takenobu

Takenobu

Takenobu is a vocal/cello and drums combo. The meaning of the Japanese name aptly suits the bold new spirit of the music they create. The essence of Takénobu is “strong heart and healthy spirit,” which comes alive in the emotional force of the vocal/cello timbre and the energy of the percussive rhythm. They are like nothing you've ever heard. Their style has been compared to everything from Lou Reed to Nick Drake. Takénobu features the rich, multi-ranged vocals of songwriter/cellist Nick Ogawa and the talented Geoff Lewit on drums. Their original songs travel through blues, folk, and pop styles on the way to Takénobu's distinctively contemporary sound. Cellist/Songwriter Nick Ogawa is a genuine talent who can clearly hold his own as a solo performer, but his heart lies in the complex, orchestral arrangements that Sufjan Stevens is so fond of. Armed with a loop pedal, Ogawa constructs gorgeous soundscapes, while drummer Geoff Lewit provides a human backbeat (and humorous between-song commentary). The cello sounds great, but it's the rich, multi-ranged vocals that carry them over the top. You really have to hear them to even remotely understand what they can do.

Lara Ewen
& the Unstrung Orchestra

Lara Ewen

"Lyric-driven tunes with plenty of twang"

Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Lara Ewen has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad, and her rootsy Americana style has defined her, from her early days as a busker in Boston and Europe to her current incarnation as the frontperson for her band, Lara Ewen and the Unstrung Orchestra. Lara's bar room-meets-bedroom vocals and bluesy guitar chops can be heard on her debut EP release, Clear (2002), as well as on the band's new full-length album, Ghosts and Gasoline (2007). Her band's current lineup includes Howard Rappaport and Mark Marshall, both of whom play lap steel and electric guitar; Donald Facompre bass, and David Ross on drums.

"This is the kind of album which sticks with you long-term, leaving an emotional imprint in the same league with your first kiss, your first road trip and your first heartbreak." - review of "Ghosts and Gasoline" from the editors at CD Baby

Peter Spink Band
Peter Spink- ---

Neil Young? Jackson Browne? James Taylor? ELLE magazine called this national touring original band “Counting Crows meets Dave Matthews.” Acoustic roots-rock delving into love and life’s further possibilities. Hypnotic rhythms of percussive acoustic guitar set the stage for Peter’s rich tenor voice and sweat-stained insight on the human condition. His dry wit is a show in itself. He made his national debuty at Woodstock ‘94 and has moved audiences from Texas to Minnesota to Maine to Washington DC and more. His third album, “Road Show” won raves of The New York Times, ELLE magazine and garnered National radio play as well as satellite networks in North America and Europe. He was part of the 2001 Grammy nominated “Public Domain” folk compilation album and a recipient of a national Meet-The-Composer grant.

“Mr. Spink’s music is infused with optimism and the excitement of striking out upon new territory, new experiences. . . .’Road Show’ is an impressive compilation.”
The New York Times.

9:30 PM
Bill Carney's Jug Addicts

Jug Addicts

NYC's most powerful jug band, the Jug Addicts were formed in 1997 out of the ashes of 2 prior jug bands, the
Metropolecats and Pork Chop. Having started by blending NYC's top 2 jug bands, the Jug Addicts continue the twinning principle by having 2 of every instrument; almost. The sound is raucous but with unexpectedly elegant touches and it makes you want to move your body. The Jug Addicts recording, "Cynthia's Kithcen" was recorded in a kitchen in NYC's east village and produced by the somewhat legendary Strokes' Sensei and Guru, JP Bowersock.

You will tap your feet and find yourself smiling at nothing in particular. You will go home whistling tunes you've never heard before. You will catch yourself talking to total strangers about arcane music and obscure musicians of years gone by. You will feel fifteen again. And best of all, you'll be back for more.

Frank Morey Band

Frank Morey

Frank Morey and his band play original American Roots Music. Morey’s influences are a timeline of true American originals- Son House, Hank Williams, Howlin’ Wolf, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, and Tom Waits. The band consists of Frank Morey on vocals, guitar and harmonica, Scott Pittman on a vintage pre-war traps kit, and Andrew Bergmann on upright bass. Live shows are dynamic and diverse and appeal to a wide range of listeners, young and old. It is not uncommon for a fifty-year-old businessman to be screaming to “Luci” alongside an eighteen-year-old punk rock girl. From Lowell, Massachusetts, Frank Morey and his band completed their fourth record, MADE IN USA, in December 2006.

"There is a type of singer-songwriter who specializes in odes to the dark urban underbelly of America. It has its roots in the cross-fertilization between the beats and the folkies dating back to the 1950s, when poets hung with hoboes in train yards and dropouts hitchhiked lonesome two-lanes...Frank Morey has been handed the torch and is handling it well." -B.Quick Indie-Music.com

“This is blues, jazz, rock and, if you insist, folk. It's Wolf and Waits, Louie and Leonard (Cohen, that is). It's thumping bass that could be behind Charlie Feathers or J.B. Lenoir. It's a trap set from a burlesque theater and it's the kid who wanted to sound like Bix Beiderbecke. Frank Morey may not know it, but he’s about to invent the new American Folk Music.”
Dave Palmeter, WUMB 91.9 FM

9:30 PM
