BASSORE

The earliest Bassore we can find is Lemuel G Bassore who was born Dec 15, 1815 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Lemuel moved to Peru,Indiana, by 1839 where he is listed as a Tailor, age 24. By 1843 he was married to Martha Henrietta Pleasants, daughter of Robert Plesants and Damaris Pleasants (cousins).
Lemuel served as Postmaster from 1858-1880 in Hogeye, Washington County, Arkansas. Lemuel and Martha had 7 children. Henrietta Clay, Margaret, George R, William Joseph, Damaris Eva, and Susan. Their oldest, Henrietta Clay Bassore who was my great-great grandmother.
In 1860 Henrietta Clay (Clay for short), at the age of 16 married Joseph Hall in Benton County, AR, and had a son named Herbert. We do not know what happened to Joseph but by 1867 she was married to James H Gideon, who was 31 years her senior and had children older than her. They moved to Texas after the Civil War and had 2 daughters. James Gideon died in 1882 leaving Clay with the young girls. Family tradition has it that she ran a brothel to support herself and her children. Clay died in 1919 under the name of H C Baker.
