Our earliest known ancestor in the Godwin line is James Godwin and his wife Mary. James died in 1762 and Mary administered his will in Johnson Co., North Carolina. He left his estate to his wife and his sons, Thomas, Johnthan, Ephriam, William and James Jr.
James Jr was born about 1736 and married Elizabeth Dawson about 1766 and they had six children. James died in March of 1801 and left his estate to Elizabeth and his children who are all listed in his will. James and Elizabeth's youngest son was Allen Godwin, born Mar 11, 1788 in Sampson Co., North Carolina.
Allen Godwin married twice and had 2 families. His first marriage was to Polly Green in 1809. They had 5 children. Polly died and Allen married Martha Reynolds and they had 9 children. Allen died August 28, 1872 in Tippah Co., Mississippi.
Allen and Polly's first son was John Allen Godwin, born abt 1815 in Johnston Co., NC. John Allen married Aletha Spencer about 1835 and they had 10 children. The youngest was Mary Ann who married William Mindett Holcomb in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1860.
