Cat Man Blues

A cat wearing a pair of pants? Coming to "steal my cream away"? Another variation on the jealous/suspicious man theme. Blind Boy Fuller recorded it in New York, on 29 April 1936. It's from the LP Oldie Blues OL 2809, which includes the lyrics (transcribed by Guido van Rijn).

Went home last night
Heard a noise, I asked my wife what was that
Went home last night
Heard a noise, I asked my wife what was that
Said Man don't be so suspicious
That ain't nothin' but a cat

Lord I travelled this world all over mama
  Takin' all kinds of chance
Travelled this world all over mama
  Takin' all kinds of chance
But I never come home before
Seein' a cat wearin' a pair of pants

Lord I wouldn't call him cat man
If he'd come around in the day
Wouldn't call him cat man
If he'd come around in the day
But he waits till late at night woman
When he can steal my cream away

Lord I want that cat man to stay away from my house
  Lordy when I'm out
Lord I want that cat man to stay away from my house
  Oh Lord when I'm out
Cause I believe he's the cause of my woman
  Wearin' the mattress down

Said I went home last night
Actin' just quiet as a lamb
Said I went home last night
  Actin' quiet as a lamb
I never raised no stuff man
Till I heared my backdoor slam.

Flyin' Airplane Blues

A popular tune (not strictly blues) recorded on October 29, 1938 with George Washington (washboard) and Sanford (Sonny Terry) Terrell (harmonica). George Washington used the artist name "Bull City Red" and "Oh Red", and he also accompanied "Blind Boy Fuller #2" - Brownie McGhee - after Blind Boy Fuller's death. While Sonny Terry, of course, later formed a lasting partnership with Brownie McGhee. It's a small world after all...

From the LP "Death Valley" (Oldie Blues OL 2809; lyrics transcribed by Guido van Rijn)

Wanna get in my airplane
Wanna get in my airplane
Wanna ride all over
Wanna ride all over your town
And if I spy the gal I'm lovin'
Old fool gonna let this airplane
Old fool gonna let this airplane down

Now here's my hand
Now here's my hand
You can leave me where you want me
You can leave me where you want me to go
And if you leave me wrong this time
And you won't leave me no
And you won't leave me no more

And I feel like walkin' (yes I do!)
I feel like walkin' (Yes!)
I feel like lyin'
I feel like lyin' down
And you know I feel just like lovin'
My gal ain't nowhere
My gal ain't nowhere around

Now you're three times seven
Now you're three times seven
Ought to know what you want to
Ought to know what you want to do
Mama and the day that you quit me
I won't be mad with
Said I won't be mad with you

Said I know my little woman
Said I know my little woman
She's bound to jump
She's bound to jump and shout
And whenever she gets hold of this here letter
I done loved my long time
I done loved my long time out

Hungry Calf Blues

Recorded on December 15, 1937 in New York. From the LP "Death Valley" (Oldie Blues 2809; lyrics transcribed by Guido van Rijn)

Your calf is hungry mama
I believe he needs a suck
I say your calf is hungry mama
And I believe he needs a suck
Yes your milk is turnin' blue
I believe he's out of luck

Says I found out now mama
The reason why I can't satisfy you, save my soul
I said hey hey
Can't satisfy you, save my soul
Yes you've got a new cat
  He's sixteen years old

But I'm gonna save my jelly mama
Gonna bring it right home to you
I said hey hey
Gonna bring it right home to you
You can't find no young cat
Roll jelly like this old one do

Says I got a new way of rollin' mama
I think it must be best
I said hey hey
Yes I think it must be best
Said these here North Carolina women
Just won't let Blind Boy Fuller rest

Mmmmmmmm
  Just won't let me rest
Mmmmmmmm
  Just won't let me rest
Said I got the kind of lovin'
Yes Lord I think it must be best

Said I roll jelly in the mornin'
And I also roll at night
I said hey hey
  I also roll at night
And I don't stop rollin'
Till I know I rolled that jelly just right

It Doesn't Matter Baby

Recorded in Memphis, 12 July 1939; on the LP "Blue and Worried Man" (Travelin' Man TM 801). The song is based on a variation of the "How long how long blues" melody.

Oo-oo-ooh, oh Lordy Lord
Oo-oo-ooh, oh Lordy Lord
It doesn't matter baby how it feels
I'll get along somehow

You needn't come runnin', screamin' and cryin'
You mistreats me woman, now you's off of my mind
It doesn't matter baby how it happened
I'll get along somehow

When I tried to love you, you wouldn't pay me no mind
You could spend my dollar like you did my dime
It doesn't matter child how it happened
I'll get along somehow

Get away from my window, don't knock at my door
I got me another woman, can't use you no more
It doesn't matter child how it happened
I'll get along somehow

Oo-ooh well, well Lordy Lord
Oo-oo-oh, oh Lordy Lord
It doesn't matter child how it happened
I'll get along somehow

Now you know I told you, a long time ago
You will have to reap just what you sow
It doesn't matter baby how it happened
I'll get along somehow

I'm doin' better than I did before
I ain't gonna let you worry my mind no more
It doesn't matter baby how it happened
I'll get along somehow

Lost Lover Blues

Recorded in Chicago on 19 June 1940, with George "Bull City Red" Washington (washboard). From the LP "Death Valley" (Oldie Blues OL 2809; lyrics transcribed by Guido van Rijn, slightly amended by us)

Said I went down by that freight depot
And that freight train he come rollin' by
Lord and I sure ain't got no lovin' baby now
And I sure ain't got no lovin' baby now

And I went off in that far distant land
I wasn't there long before I got a telegram
(What did it say?)
Sayin' now man won't you please come home
Now man won't you please come home

Then I went back home, I looked on the bed
And that best old friend I had was dead
Lord, and I ain't got no lovin' baby now
And I ain't got no lovin' baby now

And I'm sorry, sorry, sorry to my heart
But that best old friend someday must part
Lord I ain't got no lovin' baby now
And I ain't got no lovin' baby now
(Play it for me now)

Now as sure as the birds wings in the sky above
Life ain't worth livin' if you ain't with the one you love
Lord and I ain't got no lovin' baby now
Lord I ain't got no lover now

If I'd knowed you didn't love me and didn't want me to
I would've taken morphine and died
Lord I ain't got no lovin' baby now
And I ain't got no lovin' baby now

You Never Can Tell

Blind Boy Fuller recorded this song in New York on 12 July 1937 (from Oldie Blues OL 2809, lyrics transcribed by Guido van Rijn and double-checked by us :)

Say you can't never tell
  What's on these women's mind
Say you can't never tell
  What's on these women's mind
Hey she may be huggin' and kissin' you
And quittin' you all the time

Say I went home this mornin'
  Twixt 9.30 and 10
Hey, hey
  Twixt 9.30 and 10
Hey I met that woman's second man
Right, right back in my den

So she's a dirty mistreater
And she drove me from her door
She's a dirty mistreater
She drove me from her door
Hey the good book says mama
You gotta reap just what you sow

Say some women is just like a dollar
Dollar go from hand to hand
Say some women is just like a dollar
Dollar go from hand to hand
Hey some of these lowdown women
They just run from man to man

Now you know my woman says she loves me
She been lovin' me all her life
Say my woman says she loves me
She been lovin' me all her life
Hey she met a second man on that corner
She told him that same lie twice
