Blues Lyrics: Leroy Ervin

I can't tell you much about this bluesman, except that he recorded a couple of songs (this and "Blues, Black and Evil") in Houston, Texas, for the Gold Star Label somewhere between 1947 and 1951. It's on the CD "The Gold Star Sessions" (Arhoolie CD 352)

This page contains lyrics to the following song(s):

Blue, Black and Evil

Oh I'm blue black and I'm evil, and I did not make myself
Says I'm blue black and evil, and I did not make myself
Anywhere I don't find the woman that I'm lovin', I don't want nobody else

Says I believe, I believe, the good Lord has put a curse on me
I believe, I believe, the good Lord has put a curse on me
Because every woman that I got, some man takes away from me

I'm gonna buy me a bulldog, to watch me while I sleep
I'm gonna buy me a bulldog, to watch me while I sleep
So I can't wake up at night, and make my midnight creep

Mmmm... mmm...
Aahh... aahhh...
Aahh.. Lordy Lordy Lord

Says I'm gonna change my ways of livin', so I won't have to worry no more
Says I'm gonna change my ways of livin', so I won't have to worry no more
Says I'm gon' let some real good woman, enter my backdoor

Rock Island Blues

Leroy Ervin sings and plays the piano. This is a quite different song from Furry Lewis' with the same title.

They tell me the Rock Island / is a mean old train to ride
They tell me the Rock Island / is a mean old train to ride
And the reason I know it is / I've got my baby by my side

I hear the train whistle blowin' / I know it's coming after me
I hear the train whistle blowin' / I know it's coming after me
And I believe I'll go back / To my old time used to be

It's a long freight train / with a red and green light behind
It's a long freight train / with a red and green light behind
Says the red mean danger / and that green means a ramblin' mind

Says I went down to the station / baby and I looked up on the board
Says I went down to the station / baby and I looked up on the board
I asked the depot agent / did my baby go down the road?
