Blues Lyrics: Tom Archia

Tom Archia was, in fact, the front man of the house band at Chicago's Mocambo nightclub, owned by Leonard and Phil Chess. When these brothers went into the record business, with the Aristocrat label in 1947, some of their first recordings were by Tom Archia, including these two "risqué" items. They can be found on the double CD "The Aristocrat of the Blues" (The best of Aristocrat Records, on Chess/MCA).

This page contains lyrics to the following song(s):

Fishin' Pole

Originally Aristocrat single 601. The singer, by the way, was Sheba Griffin. An R&B number with a quite obvious sexual "angle", so to speak :)

FISHIN' POLE

I'm goin' fishin' baby, and I've got a long long pole
Yes I'm goin' fishin' baby, and I've got a long long pole
Fishin' with you baby, in a very deep hole

Throw my line in baby, and sink it deep
Throw my line in baby, and sink it deep
And everything be all reet

Now look at my pole baby, it's jumpin' up and down
Now look at my pole baby, it's jumpin' up and down
Come on and fish woman, and stop your messin' around

Pull your line hard baby, so that fish won't get away
Pull your line hard baby, so that fish won't get away
If you don't catch him baby, we'll fish some other way

Ice Man Blues

Originally on Aristocrat single 602. The vocalist was Jo Jo Adams.

Note the "cool" metaphors in these lyrics!

ICE MAN BLUES

I'm the ice man baby, I sell the coldest stuff in town
I'm the ice man baby, yes I sell the coldest stuff in town
Anytime you get hot baby, call up your ice man and I'll cool you down

Every man's got a woman, and every boy's got a chick
Every man's got a woman, oo-hoo and every boy's got a chick
But you don't have to worry about no ice man, cause your ice man always have his pick

You owe me for fifty pounds, yes and you claim you ain't got no dough
Listen to me baby
You owe me for fifty pounds, and you come around here tellin' you ain't got no dough
Well if you pay me some of my money, I ain't gonna put in your box no more

I sell ice to all the women
To all the finest chicks in town
Won't their husbands be real softy
When they find out what the ice man puttin' down
I'm the ice man baby, yes I sell the coldest stuff in town
And won't their husbands be real softy,
huh, when they find out what the ice man puttin' down
And I sell the coldest stuff in town!
