Mallory & Irvne Day
Particulary now, with the discovery of George Mallory's body, it is important
for mountaineers and all lovers of the outdoors to remember to celebrate
Mallory & Irvine Day on June 8th, a celebration of Great Daring on Slender
Resources.
On that day in 1924, the two climbers were spotted surmounting
the last major obstacle en route to and few hours below the summit of Mt.
Everest. They were never seen again and the burning question remains: did the
pair reach the summit of the world's highest peak before perishing on the
descent? (Andrew Irvine was only 22-years old.) Both carried Kodak VPK
cameras, and Kodak scientists believe that if found, the frozen film may yet
be developed.
The recommended beverage to celebrate GREAT DARING ON SLENDER RESOURCES is
May Punch. On June 7th, submerge a quart of sliced-up straberries in bandy,
add the essential sprig of woodruff, and cover overnight. (if the
strawberries are not sweet, add sugar.) On June 8th, at the appropriate
moment, add 4-6 bottles of Champaign, stir lightly and drink reverently.
