Scene of the crime: beach turnout across from the abandoned National Park Service Salvo Campground, North Carolina, 16 June 1998.
Things were fine until we tried to make a turn, then everything bogged down since all 3 sets of wheels were "out of track". When we were ready to leave, we unhooked the trailer, spun it around, and "took off".
It was very marginal starting up again and we bogged down again after about 40 feet. We were in fresh sand that was very soft with no tracks, not to mention that all of someone else's stuff was inside the trailer along with some of another's stuff in and on the jeep, plus these two were sitting on the trailer and the jeep tires were mostly bald. Actually, quite a humorous worst-case scenario now that I look back on it.
So, we started again by having one of the other vehicles make some tracks ahead of us and three others pushed. After about ten feet we got up to speed, two jumped onto the trailer, and we were off.
In summary, it seems that the trailer can manage on very soft sand as long as you are committed to turning it around by hand, don't load it with completely full with gear (6 boards, 12 sails, 5 booms, etc.), don't stick two people on it, don't load the tow vehicle down with even more stuff, and don't have bald tires . . .
