Explorer 1 - Launch Rocket.
Explorer 1, the first U.S. artificial satellite, was launched from Cape Canaveral on Jan. 31, 1958, by a Juno 1 rocket.  It carried several scientific experiments including one that discovered the Van Allen Radiation Belts that surround the Earth.
