The following images are from Clive's collection of photos taken since the late 1960's. They show on several pages the evolution of trams in Melbourne, Victoria, including W2 series trams, later W series trams, and Z, A and B series trams, during a time of great change.
There are also pages showing scenes from the now closed systems of Ballarat, Victoria, and Bendigo, Victoria, together with the still operating interurban line to Glenelg in Adelaide, South Australia.
In a new section, we have some images taken in Melbourne showing various tramway developments including the Route 70 diversion project, the Docklands tramway extension, and general track repair, renewal and other works.
We journey internationally to show you some double decker trams in Blackpool, Great Britain.
We also journey internationally to show you trolleybuses from New Zealand, in Auckland, Dunedin and Wellington.
Brief background to the Melbourne images
In the early 1970's, no Melbourne tram was built later than 1956 and there had been no major extensions to the system since that time.
By the late-1990's, the Melbourne tramway scene had changed dramatically. One hundred and thirty two articulated trams (B series) and three hundred rigid bogie trams (Z and A series) had been introduced since the mid-1970's, and all other regular service trams were fitted with power-operated doors. There were also been significant route extensions to East Burwood, Airport West, and Bundoora. In addition, the StKilda and Port Melbourne train lines had been converted to light rail and the City-Circle tram line built.
The tramways have been divided into two separate companies, Yarra Trams and Swanston Trams as the prelude to privatisation. The Government has announced that the Mont Albert tram line will be extended to Box Hill by 2002. Smaller projects include the Route 70 diversion project and the extension of tramway operations into the area known as Docklands, just west of the Central Business District. The Government has also announced that 90 low floor trams will be purchased over the next few years as a replacement for the Z class trams which will be approaching 30 years old by then.
