Commerce Court North sits next to Commerce Court West, and across from Scotia Plaza. Commerce Court North was completed in 1931. The building rises 477 feet, with 34 stories. The building was the tallest building in Toronto, Canada, and the British Commonwealth for over 20 years. The Commerce Court North building is one of Toronto's older architectural landmarks. The building use to have an observatory on the top floor. The observatory was closed when Commerce Court West was built. Commerce Court North is an art deco skyscraper. The building has a base, with a step backed tower rising in the middle. The base is covered in granite, and the rest of the building is covered in limestone of varied shades. The lobby in Commerce Court North, is one of the most beautiful public spaces in Canada. The lobby has stone walls with detailed carvings on them. The elevator doors are arched, and the elevators have wood panels. The stairwell doors have iron bars over the glass panels. Also in the lobby is a large window over the doors to the banking hall. The window frames the large chandelier in the banking hall, and shows the detailed domes in the banking halls ceiling. The banking hall is also a very detailed area. The hall has a ceiling with domes in it. The blue paint used in the domes, was the colour blue on a shirt, that a worker working on the building had on. The architect was searching for the right shade of blue, and happened to find it on the workers shirt. The banking hall also has stone walls. The floors in the lobby have decorative tiles with different patterns. The elevators travel as fast as 700-800 feet a min, and have been modernized. Thankfully the bank decided to incorporate and restore the Commerce Court North building, when they built Commerce Court West. Commerce Court North was originally called THE CANADIAN BANK OF COMMERCE BUILDING. The Canadian Bank of Commerce was the bank that built the building. The Canadian Bank Of Commerce amalgamated with CIBC, and Commerce Court is now the headquarters for the Canadian Imperial Bank Of Commerce (CIBC). Commerce Court North is a building that would be hard to reproduce today. It is now recognised as a historic building in Toronto. Commerce Court North also had new features it in when it was built. The building has thermostats on the outside walls of the building. The outside thermostats told the heater which parts of the building needed more heate. If it was winder on one side, then the thermostats would tell the heater to give more head to that side of the building. The water in the building was treated with ozone, filtered, and chilled before it was pumped to the fountains. The building also had elevator controls which could tell which elevator was closer to the floor making the call for an elevator. These features were the latest features for buildings of that erea. Commerce Court North was designed by Darling and Pearson. It also set a new standard of height. And is important in Toronto's architectural history.
