IAC Hawker Hurricane MK I

In June 1943 the Irish Air Corps recieved the first of 11 Hawker Hurricane MK I orderded from the UK. These were war- weary airframes and were exchanged for windfall MK II's and a couple of tons of aircraft scrap. The Irish Free State, as it was then known, saw a substancial number of Allied and German aircraft crash in or around it terrority. The coming of the aircarft meant a resurrection of No .1 Fighter Squadron for the IAC. This particular aircraft was delivererd on 7-7-1943 and withdrawn from use in September 1946.

The old Airfix kit formed the basis for this project. Accurate in outline, well engineered and reasonably detailled I really liked this old kit. The cockpit was enhanced with parts from the Airwaves set and a number of scratch- built items. Flaps were dropped and detailled with plastic rod In addition the use of rod and wire helped to detail the undercarriage bay.
The panel lines were newly engraved and the landing light was filed to get a better fit with the wing. Aeroclub canopy was used to replace the kit part. The paint scheme was in a standard RAF B pattern but the underside was painted in a non-standard light grey. The decals came forma mixture of Aermaster sheet "Foreign Hurricane Pt.1"and the underwing tricolour were soucred form the Max Decals sheets as they better matched the organge in the Celtic bosses.
