QUEST FOR THE HUNDRED DOLLAR HAMBURGER

Being a full time college student doesn't offer much time to putt around looking for the perfect "Hundred Dollar Hamburger," but I'd like to share a few of my favorite fly-away destinations.

buzz

First and foremost, Ball Airport, my home base.
Ball Airport is a small grass strip in northern Victoria County, TX. It's been around since 1937 and is the home of EAA Chapter 340. Stop in on any Saturday or Sunday morning, and you'll find a hot cup of coffee and lots of excellent hangar-flying.

ABI: Abilene Regional Airport
A friend and I recently flew out from Waco to experience Joe Allen's Barbecue. A short drive from the field by courtesy car, it's some of the best brisket I've had.

CLL: Easterwood Airport at College Station, TX
Another nice FBO with courtesy car to too many good restaurants to name. El Arroyo, the Dixie Chicken, and Freebird's Burritos are among the best.

GLS: Galveston Scholes Field
Although I can't speak for the restaurants around this field, a friend and I flew in to see the Lone Star Flight Museum and were very impressed. Huge collection of WWII and earlier military aircraft, and all flying! You can taxi right up to the back door and use the ticket desk phone to close your flight plan.

T26: The Flying V Ranch, Louise, TX
Robbie Vajdos' Flying V Ranch is a great grass strip a hop, skip, and a jump from Houston. Robbie restores award-winning antique aircraft, and his sister's cafe, he Antique Eatery, is execellent. Just a few blocks off the field, you can probably catch a ride with Robbie. Best chicken fried steaks and hamburgers around.

VCT: Victoria Regional Airport
Victoria Regional Airport is my "second" home base. The FBO, Blue Sky Aviation, has some great people, and the Feedlot Restaurant, on the field, has some great barbecue and hamburgers.

More to come...hey, I've only got 100 hours...
