Longwood Gardens
Located at Kennett Square. PA, near Wilmington, DE
This property, orignally owned by William Penn, was sold to Samuel and Joshua Peirce and subsequently to Pierre S. du Pont in 1906. The latter developed the gardens and used the property as a coutry estate and finally donated the property to a private nonprofit organization. The 1,050 acres are tended today by 600 persons. Upkeep is totally financed through the endownment, admission fees and gift shop. No government funds are received.
Considered the world's premier flower and tree exhibit, there are acres and acres of indoor and outdoor examples.
