Hi, Ken Leonard is my name and Amateur Radio is my game and this is my home on the Internet. An interest in electronics (as well as a cousin, a brother-in-law, and several friends who were hams)prompted me to become involved in Amateur Radio as a hobby and I acquired my first ham ticket in 1957.
Amateur radio is a community of people that use radio transmitters and receivers to communicate with other Amateur radio operators. Amateur radio operators are often called ham radio operators or simply "hams." (The origin of this nickname is for all practical purposes lost. Although some people still speculate about it, few agree and even fewer care. Amateur radio operators proudly call themselves hams and nobody knows why.)
Ham radio operators are licensed by the United States Government. They make up a pool of trained communicators who can be called upon in time of emergency or natural disaster. They enjoy far more privileges of radio operation than "CB" radio operators. Among hams, "CB" is often referred to as the 'Children's Band' or 'Candy Band.'
