Myasthenia Gravis (Continued)
2/01/04 Update: The news is not entirely good but not terrible. First, since my last entry, I did manage to eliminate the Histamine II blockers, Prednisone and Mestinon and spent approximately 1 1/2 years symptom free. About September of 2003, I began to experience some mild symptoms: tongue sensations, some mild slurred speech, and swallowing symptoms. I reported these to my neurologist who wasn't sure that it was MG but said I could re-start the Mestinon. Having the disease makes one more perceptive than being the expert. The symptoms disappeared by taking the Mestinon.The day before Thanksgiving of 2003, extreme double vision at all angles popped in. On Thanksgiving day, every person at a family event I attended had 4 eyes. Reading was impossible. Digit cramping or failure returned.
I was placed on an increased level of Mestinon and the infamous Prednisone was re-introduced. I'm now on 35 mg per day of Prednisone and with the Mestinon, things are pretty much normal. As noted on the previous page, it takes about 3 weeks for the Prednisone level to be effective. I'm not sure the current level is sufficient. We first tried 20 and then 25 mg. After a satisfactory level is established, the plan is to try and transition to Prednisone every other day to minimize side effects. That process is underway. By the way, now that I know the cause, re-experiencing the double vision gives me better appreciate for the difficulties it introduces. In my case, I never knew where my feet were! Walking downstairs was not a 2 eye adventure. It was dangerous!
