This large air-superiority plane shares the same shape as the MiG-29 but it is a completely different plane. For a start it is larger and able to carry more weapons. It has in-flight refueling but it can fly for 2,500 miles on it's internal tanks. It is assumed to be a match for the F-15 fighter.
This is an extreamly manuverable aircraft. At the paris air show in 1989 it demonstrated it's incredible moves. On one occasion the plane went into a vertical climb, stopped , slid down for a short distance then recovered to normal flight!. In another move the plane was observed at a high angle of attack (90 + degrees) and it recovered to normal flight!.
The Su-27 is controlled by an advanced fly by wire (FBW) systen. Leading and trailing edge flaps are controlled by computer during flight for maximum combat control, but are controled by the pilot during take off and landing. The carrier version (Su-27B2) has reinforced landing gear and has 2 nose wheels. It also has small canards on the forware fuselage for the greater low speed control needed for carrier landings.
The Su-27 has a pulse doppler radar in the large nose cone. It also has laser range finders. A IR sensor is located forward of the canopy. The Su-27 can carry a large range of missiles from long range to close in missiles for dog fighting. The missiles are backed up by a 30mm cannon.
