GR-30 NEWSLETTER, OCTOBER 11, 1998:

Hi to everybody !

Quite some time has passed since I wrote the last newsletter, but still I hope everything is going well with you and your music-making.

The GR-30 page hasn't changed that much since last time, but a few changes are visible. First there is of course our growing FAQ-page which gives rise to most mail, still there are 7 unanswered questions ! My guess is that together we should be able to solve those matters, so please send in your suggestion(s) to the stated problems after visiting http://geocities.datacellar.net/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/6226/gr30faq.html .

In the last newsletter I mentioned the possibility of opening a section for the more technical matters like using the GR-30 for other purposes like voice-to-midi converting. Being a full-time teacher I have little time, so:......................... What I am looking for is somebody who wants to cooperate with me in opening and maintaining such a section. When you have interest and some knowledge of electronics (I have some), but most of all: when you have some time to spend on these matters (and corresponding with me if necessary on certain subjects) then you seem to be the one person that the techies who visit the GR-30 page are waiting for ! When you feel like doing that, then together we can make up the html and I'll send it to the server with credits and all. If so: mail me !

After some typing and clicking I just finished the beginnings of a new linkpage at: http://geocities.datacellar.net/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/6226/midigusi.html

Do you have trouble with the GeoCities-watermark (the somewhat irritating logo that floats (at my screen) near the FAQ link )? I understood that the javascripting that GeoCities has can cause problems. If so, please let me know. I will try to avoid the accidental clicking on watermark in a newer version of the GR-30 page if possible.

What we, as users of the GR-30 page still need is a specialised discussion group, which in itself is much more flexible then a FAQ-page. Would you like to be a moderator of a GR-30 discussion group on the WEB ? Please let me know if you use the here given  option, namely: click REGISTER at http://www.egroups.com/list/midiguitar/ for a FREE eGroups.com account that you will moderate for us, users of the GR-30 ! (The outcome of some discussions could still be placed on the FAQ-page of course)

HOW LONG DO WE STILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR IT ????????

I mean of course : CakewalkŪ Guitar StudioTM For Windows 95/98 http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/GS/GS1.html I am VERY curious !!!!!!!!!! as one excerpt reads: " Guitar Studio is seamlessly integrated with the Roland GR-30 guitar synthesiser via an on-screen control panel for accessing the GR-30's wide range of sounds and effects. With the control panel displayed during playback, you can customize instrument patches and change other MIDI-based settings in real-time. "

Finally dear GR-30 user (or would-be user): the GR-30 page proves to be an appreciated place on the WWW (thanks not in the least to its founder Gord Braun)  and as I am short in time and want to continue its quality, I ask YOU to contribute whatever you might have to offer, like your experience with the combination of guitar, pickup, synth, software, solutions to problems, suggestions to new sections, useful links etc., etc.

In the same spirit I want to ask you for your patches, specialised sysex and musical creations (in MIDI or mp3). As you will remember there was this sneaky plan to open a page with our creations !!

I wish you lots of good times with the GR-30, hopefully the next newsletter will:

a) come within a shorter period than the last and

b) will use up the other 9 MB at the server  ;->

Regards,

Paul

GR-30 NEWSLETTER, JULY 23, 1998:

Good evening/day to you,   As you might have seen the GR-30 page has had some changes, mostly expansions.   Of course there is, since some time, the classifieds-section ( http://geocities.datacellar.net/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/6226/classifd.html ) where you might find or lose GR-30 related gear.

Quite useful seems the FAQ page at http://geocities.datacellar.net/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/6226/gr30faq.html .

When you mail me, please conform to the given rules on the page.   The popup-screen is just added, it comes when you start at http://geocities.datacellar.net/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/6226/gr30.html and hopefully leads to some MIDI files to publish at the site. Please let me know if it gives you trouble as it appeared to interfere sometimes with the  banners of GeoCities at my computer sometimes.

Sometimes reports of dead links come in my mail, for which I thank you (please give the details of the broken link when you report them). As you might have seen I didn't succeed in checking all links on the linkpage ( http://geocities.datacellar.net/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/6226/grlinks.html ) as I placed a sign in the list to show where I stopped checking last time. I guess that I will start a whole new linkpage with a layout that groups the different types of links. It's quite difficult to get an overview from this heritage from Gord. When you have suggestion for links to include in such a page. please let me know. There is a good chance someone else can benefit from your suggestion.

Maybe it is an idea to open a technical section, as it appears to me that there is some interest in the inner workings of the device(s). I am quite interested myself in electronics, so maybe together we can come up with useful ideas. One idea  I have at the moment is to use the GR-30 for converting voice (with microphone) to MIDI. A suggestion for others could be to interface other (stringed) instrument to the GR-30.

It is you and all those other participants in this site that keep it on the web. Happily enough the GR-30 site seems to serve a purpose as I find when checking my mail each day.  ANY suggestion which leads to a better sharing in information, solving problems, creating new possibilities is welcome. I have a respectable amount of webspace at my disposal, so whenever you want to get anything published in relation to the GR-30, just send it to me (plain text or HTML pages made by you) and I will see if it can get up.

Well, of course I cannot be sure of you people having holidays, but I sure can enjoy the benefits of several weeks off duty. Have a nice time anyway.

All the best,

Paul Duivestein

P.S. The GR-30 page can now also be reached via the pseudonym: www.bigfoot.com/~paul.duivestein notice that for some time you will encounter a (still quite messy) indexpage first. This will change in a while, I will let you know when.
