PLEASE READ

Hello to all fans of MIDI guitar synthesis, and the GR-30 in particular. Further down are a bunch of resources for what Roland boldly calls the fastest tracking guitar synth in the world .. until they come out with something else. :)  If you own a GR-30 or if you're thinking about owning one, then you've come to the right place.

First off, if you're new to the GR-30, want to know what it's about and what people think of it, a trip down to the reviews and ads might be what you need to get started. If you're looking for audio samples and demos, see here and here. If you're interested in patches, patch lists, editors, MIDI tunes and other helpful stuff, look over here or here. Want to explore the world of guitar in general? Try Roland GR And Other Guitar Links. Otherwise, read on.

Soon after bringing the GR-30 home in August of last year, I started looking for anything to do with my beloved new synth, bookmarking whatever the search engines could dig up, which was surprisingly little, given that the GR had already been out for over half a year.

At around this time, I was seriously thinking about web publishing.  It seemed like everyone else had a homepage and I was feeling left out. Besides that, I thought maybe there were a few things I could offer the Internet community if only I could learn how it all worked.

To keep it brief, by late September I was...*out there*, and one of the first documents to go online was this one.

The page has changed a lot, thanks in part to the popularity of the GR-30, the growing interest in synth axing, and of course the contributions of other MIDI guitar enthusiasts.

Gord Braun

...........................................................Netherlands, Vianen, april 29, 1998 :

Hello again guitar-synthesising fans,

Since Gord is quitting the page, as announced in his mail from april 20 1998:

" This isn't an update.  It's to let you know that I intend to part company with my GR30 before long-- and the page as well. Btw, the GR isn't really to blame for this decision.  Rather, it's the need to go after other gear and pay some old bills....the usual story for a musician. :)

I hope to have the synth sold by the end of May or June at the latest.  At that time (or sooner), I'd like to turn the page over to someone who can give it a good home. "

......I am taking over, starting with just minor adjustments, I hope to keep the GR-30 page updated within the bounds of my scarce time.

.......Paul Duivestein...........................................................

Email me with your comments and suggestions, or if you want to be notified of changes to this page.  If you know of any GR-30 links not covered on this page, or if you have links of your own, please pass them on.

If you prefer, Netmind's URLMinder can let you know when a change has occurred, though not about specific changes. Look for yourself.

Thanks for stopping by. --

    GR-30 Patches

Dragan Todorovic's MIDI and Guitar Page has GR-30 patches and MIDI arrangemants.

Paul Kucharski's Fingerstyle Guitar Page has music largely produced with a Godin nylon string guitar and the GR30.

Mac users, I found the Omnibird GR-30 editor for System 7 and put it on this web server.  A couple of people have told me that the original url pointed to a corrupt file, though the copy at my end is said to work ok.  So I replaced it with this link from Shareware Music Machne which has an abstract and download for the Mac editor in an .hqx archive.  Hopefully at least one of these will do the job.  Please keep me posted on how things work out...or not.

The Complete GR-30 Patch and Tone Lists Thanks to Mat Silvers for giving me the idea for making these available.

You can download a GR30 instrument definition file (.ins) for Cakewalk (NOTE !: I zipped it, so you won't get a misunderstanding when using Internet Explorer, which uses the .ins format for other purposes). It covers the GR's alphanumeric patch list, as opposed to the tone elements.

    GR-30 Troubleshooting Tips

Layer3-encoded .wav files based on some of the sounds in the patch area Note:  Some of these samples are large enough to make for a long wait if you want to stream them, especially if you have a slower modem.  If you haven't the time or patience for this, download the files and listen to them offline instead. With Netscape, hold down the shift key while clicking on a name.  I don't know what the routine is for other browsers like IE, but I doubt it's much different...??

NOTE: AT THIS MOMENT THESE WAV-FILES ARE NOT downloadable FROM THIS SERVER.

(YOU CAN LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT THEM )

Here are a few GR30-based MIDI songs.

Some selections are for General MIDI or GS instruments, and involved the GR-30 as a MIDI input device. Others are meant specificly for the GR-30's internal sound source. Mail yours !

  • While The City Sleeps 1:34 -- Gord Braun ... A slow, easy listening number using the Dropped D variation of the Electric 6 patch, and capoed on the 5th fret to produce the key of G (GR-30).
  • Maria 3:21-- by Dragan Todorovic ... This is a Greek bouzouki tune (GM).
  • Whistlers' March 0:50 -- G. Braun ... This is more a demo of the whistle patch than an actual melody (GR-30).
  • Maiden's Waltz  2:05 -- G. Braun ... GS translation of a waltz originally done on the GR-30.  It might sound ok on a GM instrument. (for Roland Sound Canvas SC55 or compatible)
  • Frank's Exotic Greenery 1:44 -- G. Braun (GS)
  • Tyne 1:33 G. Braun (GR-30) ...uses the ELECTRIC 8 patch
  • A Goodbye Melody1:22 G. Braun (GR-30) ...uses the JAZZ 2 patch
