GR-30 Patches

Each of the MIDI files in tables 1 and 2 constitute a single temporary patch and were done by me. The system exclusive messages embedded in these .mid files will NOT overwrite the user patches in your synth.
But "FARBE1.MID" (below table 2) WILL overwrite the users patches area in your synth, so make a backup before you play "FARBE1.MID by saving your patch-settings using sysex.
Rather, their settings apply only to the temporary memory area, and therefore are safe to load into your GR30 for auditioning purposes. If you'd like to store the temporary settings as user patches, you should perform a 'Write Patch' operation. (See your manual for details on using this function.)

All 128 patches in Table 1 (above) are now available in bulk dump form. Simply play GR30BLK1.MID into your GR-30 to store all the sounds as user patches A11-D84.
Note: Before loading a bulk patch set, please remember to back up any of the GR's internal patches that you wish to keep, as a bulk dump will overwrite them all.
TABLE # 2 | |||
FARBE1.MID is a complete patch set (bulk dump) contributed by Dragan Todorovic of Belgrade. Some patches were created for use with Yugoslavian folk music. A number of them employ the GR30's harmony functions ("Terca"), while others make use of arpeggio. Dragan's "South Wind" patches-- turska1.mid and turska2.mid-- are deep-detuned sounds which are ideal for Turkish and Arabian music. More of Dragan's patches can be found at his MIDI And Guitar Page. |
Pressed for time? Why not download the whole archive? This zip file contains all the patches in tables 1 and 2, plus Dragan's Farbe1.mid, turska1.mid, and turska2.mid.
Temporary patches take the form of raw MIDIEX / system exclusive (.syx) messages or sysex-embedded MIDI files (format 0 or 1). The patches can also be extracted as temporary data (see further down).
Complete user patch sets should take the form of bulk bumps and saved in MIDIEX (.syx) format, or as sysex within a standard MIDI file (.mid) -- same format as the temporary patches. See your manual (p. 31) for instructions on performing a bulk dump. Or you can request all internal user patch data by using one of the files in the sysex area. See note 2 further down.
MORE ON TEMPORARY (SINGLE) PATCHES
A temporary data request sysex message can be used to tell the GR-30 to send its current temp. values. As an option to downloading the 'gr30temp.syx' file from the sysex area, you might want to try copying and pasting the following string into your sequencer/sysex program:
F0 41 10 00 07 11 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 50 2E F7
...and sending it to the GR-30, making sure the synth is setup for what's called a 'handshake' transfer, where the GR's MIDI In and Out are connected to your computer in a two-way fashion. Your GR-30 should then respond by sending a 92-byte packet like this one:
F0 41 10 00 07 12 02 00 00 00 64 40 03 03 03 03 03 03 23 01 40 40 40 4C 4C 4C 4C 4C 4C 3A 01 40 40 72 40 40 40 40 40 40 03 23 2E 09 00 03 03 05 06 01 00 07 03 04 0A 00 00 0C 40 01 3F 09 09 09 09 09 09 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 40 40 40 40 40 40 00 00 00 26 F7
...which you would save as a MIDI file, or save in .syx format with your sysex utility, and import into a new MIDI file with your sequencer. You'll have to check your software's documentation for info on doing what I've outlined.
Your MIDI program may be capable of sending the request sysex and recording the incoming data at the same time. If not, you may need to have more than one instance of the program running at once. I understand that such is the case with some software. OTOH, your sequencer program might be one that allows playback of sysex on one track, and recording of same on another. To repeat, see your manuals and online help for details.
Note 1: Another way to retrieve the settings for individual patches is to set the GR-30 to bulk dump mode. Select a user patch by its assigned number (A11--d84), and transmit the data using the instructions on page 31 of the manual. You can also use the bulk dump mode to transmit the system settings, the entire user patch set, or both in a single dump. Groups of 32 patches (A only, B only, C only, D only) can also be sent in this way.
Note 2: The procedure for requesting temporary data can also be used for requesting internal patch data. To do this, you can use either the .syx or the .mid file in the sysex area.
Note 3: For patches with arpeggio enabled - - If you find that your GR-30 isn't receiving the arpeggio data properly, ie the rhythm sounds wrong or is in a strange time signature, turn the GR off, wait a few moments, turn it back on, and load the patch again. This happens with my GR-30 alot, and I don't know why it keeps coming up or why turning the synth off fixes the problem, but it works...which is better than no cure at all.
