New! Download a 1.1 MB .mp3 file of me playing the timpani solo "Primal Mood".
Hello, I am Joe Jewell, a student at Lakeshore High School in Stevensville, Michigan. I am in the Class of 2000, a member of the Lakeshore Marching Band and Symphonic Band (see the Lakeshore Percussion homepage), and a member of the track team, Science Olympiad Team (co-captain), and Academic Challenge Team (captain). I attend St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in Stevensville. I also volunteer to help coach the Lakeshore Middle School Spelling Team (I am a former member).
I like science, math, and NASA. My favorite movie is Apollo 13. I enjoy percussion, and my favorite percussion instrument is the timpani. I like classical music, especially music with prominent timpani parts. Here is an .mp3 of me playing this year's timpani solo, "Primal Mood". My favorite composers are Richard Strauss and Beethoven. To hear the introduction to Strauss' tone poem "Also Sprach Zarathustra", click on the link to download a MIDI. This piece was made famous as the theme music of "2001: A Space Odyssey". Many of my favorite MIDI files are on my MIDI Page.
News!
Since October of 1998, I have worked for Whirlpool Corporation at their new Benton Harbor Administrative Center building. I'm an Internet Analyst there (with 5 other high school students, all but 1 from Lakeshore), and it's a great opportunity to develop some new skills, and put the ones I already have to good use.
I have been playing in two orchestras, the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra, where I am the principal percussionist, and the Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra (in St. Joseph), where I am the principal timpanist. I enjoy both orchestras. KJSO tends to play more classical music (such as Tchaikovsky's "Capriccio Italien" and Berlioz' "Hungarian March"), while LMYO plays more popular orchestral music (such as the score from "Apollo 13" and music from "The Nutcracker Suite").
The Lakeshore band show, which this year featured music from the Broadway play "Beauty and the Beast", placed 4th in Flight III at the MCBA State Finals, held in the Pontiac Silverdome in November. This was an improvement over our 5th place finish last year. Visit the Lakeshore Percussion page to see pictures from this season, and soon digitized .mp3 audio (as soon as I get around to it).

The Lakeshore Percussion Web Page is now being maintained by me. Look for a cleaner (and faster-loading) design, as well as some new features.

digitized it from the logo that appears on our jackets and T-shirts.
