I've made several rockets so far with varying degrees of success. Why? I bought an Estes Alpha III starter kit while in the U.S. in August '96 and purchased some 1/2 A engines at the same time. Of course they don't fit, so the first rocket I built was just an attempt to get some use out of them. I hadn't yet realised you can buy this stuff in the U.K. I soon realised that designing and building your own rockets is more fun than buying kits.
Over the years we've had a lot of fun building and flying these rockets. Some of the best family days out have involved trips to Baildon Moor, our favourite launch site.
