January 2002 Edition

Happy New Year 2002!

Welcome to 2002. The first item on the agenda this year, as usual, is the annual New Year’s Day Glider Contest. This event is held at the Indiana University Stadium parking lot. It is always a good time and a great way to kick off the new year. Bring your gliders out to the stadium around 9:00 am or so. The first contest flight starts at 10:00 a.m. Be sure to dress for the weather. In the past, we have had rain, fog, sub-zero temps, blowing & drifting snow, and sunny skies with temps in the 60s. There is usually hot coffee available & hot chili to warm your insides, if the weather turns cool. There should be two winches in operation for launching and some volunteers will be required to drag the lines back to the launch area. You don’t need a glider to participate! There will also be some professional “glider guys” there to assist any rookies.

New Meeting place:

*This article is being re-run from last month for those of you who failed to read and/or understand it’s contents. Rumor has it that the “Dork Award” will be given to anyone who shows up at the Cook Bldg. on January 9!

Unless you’ve been living in a cave or toss this newsletter with the rest of the junk mail, you should know by now that we will begin meeting at a new location. Starting in January of 2002, we will hold our club meetings at the Eye Center of Southern Indiana, which is located at 1011 W. 2nd Street in Bloomington. We will enter through the East door. Meetings will still begin at 7:00 p.m. This new meeting place is courtesy of Monroe County R/C Club member Dr. Matt Fornefeld. Thanks Matt! We want to thank Tom Osborne & the fine folks at Cook Inc. for allowing us to meet in their building for many years. That operation is moving at the end of 2001. Thanks again Tom!

Christmas Dinner is Huge!

The annual Monroe County R/C Club’s Christmas dinner/meeting was a huge success. The crowd was huge, the shrimp & mushrooms were huge, the dinner was huge, the amount of fun had was huge, and by the end of the evening, many of the members & guests were huge. The traditional “name that plane’ contest was won by our President & “Member of the Year” recipient, Mark Sexton. Congratulations Mark, for a job well done, as usual. The 50/50 drawing was won by our new meeting location host, Matt Fornefeld. I’m guessing he was the lucky winner because he bought the most tickets. It was for a good cause. I’ve been informed that on December 17, 2001, $300.00 was donated to the Back Street Mission in Bloomington and another $300.00 was donated to The Community Kitchen in Bloomington, on behalf of the Monroe County R/C Club! Thanks to everyone who donated! Thanks also to Marty Bassett for making all the arrangements for this year’s dinner. Great job Marty!

Interesting Bits…

When fat boys travel North to Richard Lashure’s construction hangar, they always seem to get side tracked at the Broad Ripple Brew Pub. Ask for the “Red” beer!

Did you get to fly on the “shortest day”? After 12/21, the days start getting longer again!

Charlie Thompson has been so busy building & repairing airplanes that he’s gotta go to Florida to get away from us fer a while… Thanks for all the help Charlie!

Steve Jackson finally found Julian’s glider. He just happened to be at the field when the farmer started to pick the corn. He dashed down the road & hitched a ride in the combine!

Jeff McGlocklin was flying solo when his aircraft quit running. It would have been a good “dead stick” landing if he had floats. The recent rain had created a lake at the West end of the field which made short landing retrievals a little bit wet, a little bit muddy, and I hear the water was really cold. Jeff is already dried out & ready to go again.

There was another hit of radio interference at the field. One plastic Cessna retired. That’s 3 hits for me in one season. There were none in the previous four years. This is not a good trend!

Me being the butt hole, ran off another flyer from the club field on 12/21. He was not a member & had no AMA membership. This is another trend that is not good!

Swap Meet Date Set…

March 3 is the date of the 2002 Monroe County R/C Club Swap Meet. Stay tuned for details & start getting your sale & trading materials together. The event will be at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. I don’t have any table or admission prices yet, but they should be available at the January meeting. We will also need some club members to assist with the set-up, tear-down, ticket sales, and food sales.

Volunteer early, don’t make it hard on the organizers to find help. Contact Bob Watson at 812-824-2521 or e-mail him at wtsnbb@cs.com.
