December Meeting

The annual Christmas dinner / meeting was held on December 11th at Hoosier Bar & Grill. The club purchased a nice variety of hors d’oeuvres for the pre-dinner gathering. The shrimp seemed to be the favorite among members & guests alike. The room was nice, the food was good, & the service was excellent. The price was right too!

Several members & their families were noticeably absent, due to work commitments & illness, but we still had around thirty people in attendance. We sent “get well” cards to Charlie Thompson, Nick Carder, & Bob Watson.

Tom Osborne ran the 50/50 drawing and Randy Byers won the pot of $131.00, with ticket number 6395. Our president Mark Sexton reported that with the proceeds from our “pizza nite” & other donations, our total donation to charity this year would be almost $500.00.

Tom also ran the “name that plane” contest that Bruce Hoffman had prepared for our enjoyment. I think Julian Robertson won the contest but I didn’t hear anything “official”. I do know for a fact that it sure was tricky. You really had to know your aircraft to have a chance. Bruce never makes it easy!

A good time was had by all who attended & the plan is to do it again next year.

Glider Contest

The 2003 New Year’s Day Glider Contest got off to a soggy start this year with a two hour rain delay. Who would ‘a thunk it? Most of the participants spent the morning at the Cracker Barrel, while a couple waited it out at the IU stadium’s parking lot. The wind was brisk & it’s direction variable but the event finally got underway around noon.

We all had a great time playing out in the cold. I know there were some pictures taken & some gliders broken, so look for an official report from the event CD, Brent Hoover, next month. I believe Johnny Berlin whipped up on us local boys again but donated all his winnings to our club treasury. Thanks Johnny & congratulations! Be sure not to ask Steve Jackson about his yellow Gentle Lady & don’t ask Tim Sparks how his glider flies with the transmitter turned off!

Snow Flying…

There have been several people enjoying the winter weather by flying model aircraft. Just bundle up & replace your wheels with skis (not applicable to helis). The winter winds are usually brisk so don’t use your best prize winning scale aircraft. The runway gets a lot bigger when all the surrounding area is covered with snow! Choose some gloves that will fend off frost bite for the duration of your flight but still allow you to feel the sticks on your transmitter. Float planes seem to do pretty well on snow too, so don’t let dust collect on them until next summer. Ask some of the pilots who have been seen playing out in the cold, about their snow flying fun. The crazy people that I have seen out in the snow this winter include; Bob Shireman, Mark Sexton, Darrell Sission, Randy Byers, Dave Towensend, & Bill Black. There may be more of them out there somewhere, just waiting for the snow to cover the Monroe County R/C Club runway or Nebo Memorial Field…

For Sale:

Dennis Taylor has a couple of nice models for sale. Check out his Raptor 30 Heli. It has a JR 7 channel radio, Futaba gyro, & OS 32 Max engine. He’s asking $650.00.

Dennis also has an Edge 540. It flew great with a Saito 80 & he’s asking $150.00. You can contact Dennis at dtaylor@scican.net.

Bill Black has a couple of airplanes for sale also. He has a Lazy Ace biplane that was flown with an OS 1.08 engine. You may have seen it at the field. It’s the one that has “Putnam County Flying Service” on the side. He’s almost giving it away at $200.00.

Bill also wants to take a big loss by selling his “Prime Cut”. It has been seen at the field flying with a Moki 2.1. He’s asking just $200.00 for it also. You can contact Bill at 765-342-9336 or e-mail him at osiris @scican.net.

Words to the wise…

If U wanna get into helicopters, be prepared to spend a lot more money than you wanted to.

If you wanna build a model airplane from plans, be prepared to spend a lot more time on it than you wanted to.

If you wanna sell anything, be prepared to take a lot less money than you wanted for it.

If you wanna fly R/C, you’ve gotta turn on the transmitter. That’s how it got the name R/C (radio control)...

If you own a 1988 Dodge minivan with the Mitsubishi (pronounced sons-a -bitchy) engine, DO NOT attempt to rebuildd the carburetor.

If you want your friends to help rebuild that carburetor that you weren’t supposed to rebuild in the first place, be prepared to buy lots of beer.
