March 2003 Edition
February Meeting Notes…
The February meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club was called to order by
Mark Sexton at 7:08 pm (EST), with twenty-two people in attendance. Two of those
people were visitors, interested in joining the club, and both were voted in.
Please welcome Bobby Cottingham & Steve Bryant.
We talked a little about the Model Aviation magazine subscription that we
have been sending to Fairview School for several years. It will be decided at a
later date if we should continue this, or expand to other schools, or stop.
It was decided to pay the AMA for three intro-pilots again this year. They
are Bob Shireman, Bruce Hoffman, & Dave Poland.
A date of August 10 was chosen for our annual public air show. There may be
more of a charity theme this year. There could be a bigger raffle & higher
prices for pop & food, but the money raised would be donated to charity.
There is an investigation underway to determine if we can afford to buy or
rent a permanent port-a-pot for the club field. Our current facility has had a
hard life & just can’t handle the volume of business it has been getting the
last couple of seasons.
The annual fun fly date was set for June 22 & our annual club picnic date
was set for August 24. A “Cub Fly” has been scheduled for October 5.
The meeting was adjourned to Nick’s English Hut at 7:56...
2003 Swap Meet Report...
The 2003 Monroe County R/C Club’s swap meet could have been called the snow
meet. The winter weather moved into the Monroe County Fairgrounds on Saturday
afternoon (2/22) and dumped more than half a foot of snow. The crowd was down a
bit due to the rotten road conditions. A few of the vendors that had reserved
tables didn’t make the trip either. We still had a great time & there were
some real bargains available to alert, smart shoppers. Matt Fornefeld had the
greatest bargain table again this year. He now has a reputation for bringing
quality items priced to sell fast. Some were sold before he got them carried in
to his table! Don Hudson was there again with some great deals on new parts
& supplies priced at well over 50% off.
Bruce Hoffman & Bob Watson ran the admittance/sign-in table with a little
help from Brent Hoover’s daughter. Mark Sexton took care of the snack table
again this year & kept the shoppers fueled up with coffee, pop, water,
doughnuts, chips, & hotdogs. He had some help from Andrew Shireman when
Andrew wasn’t taste testing the products.
Tim Mellott got the best buy of the day. He took home a slightly used Cap 232
with a YS 120 for a very small price. He’ll learn to pull that throttle stick
back now! Congratulations Tim!
I believe everybody who braved the winter weather to come out, had a great
time, & decided we should do this again next year. Thanks to everyone who
helped make the 2003 swap meet a success!!!
Newsletter Expansion…
In order to keep our corporate & business sponsors informed about
club happenings & to keep the club membership informed about our sponsors,
we will begin listing all our sponsors in the monthly newsletter and sending a
copy to each sponsor. Please bear with me while I try to figure out how to work
this into our snail mail & e-mail lists.
These sponsors contribute one hundred dollars per year to our cause, in
exchange for a little advertising. We post a sign for each of them on our
shelter, that can be seen from Wylie Road. We also encourage members to do
business with them as a “thank you” for their support.
When you show up to fly at the club field & find the grass neatly mowed,
you will be reminded of the value of these sponsors to the club membership.
Their contributions pay for the majority of the seasonal mowing. They also make
it possible for our club to make donations to charity.
Look for their graphics on the events calendar page of the newsletter &
check out their signs on the club shelter at our club flying field on Wylie Road
near Bloomington, Indiana.
Our condolences to Randy Byers & Neil Zook. Their mothers both passed
away during the month of February.
