April Meeting:4/11/2001
You’re gonna get a little extra detail on the April meeting. The secretary & vice president were both absent & I got railroaded into keeping notes for the minutes. The following is what was read at the May meeting.
The April meeting was called to order by our club president, Mark Sexton, at 7:01:45 Eastern Standard Time. There were nineteen people present, including three visitors, so introductions were the first order of business. The visitors were Thomas & Ben Kuhn & Earnest Berry. Club members present were; Mark, Marty, Nick, Tim, Charlie, RG, me, Randy, Tom, Penny, Bob, Joe, Kevin, Matt, Ed, & Henk. Thomas Kuhn was voted into the club (since he had fifty bucks). The treasurer was absent so Mark reported a current balance of $4,560.63. There were rumblings about an audit, since Brent wasn’t there (just kidding). The Vice President, Bruce Hoffman was also absent, so we suspected they were on their way to Florida. The minutes from the March meeting were unavailable. In old business, Mark announced that the new club sign was finished & had been installed at the field. Mark also reported that the out-house had been serviced & was ready for action. The next item on the agenda was our advertiser’s status. 1st Insurance Group, Kliendorfer’s Hardware, & Everlasting Memorials, have either already paid or are going to pay. We lost two advertisers that won’t be renewing, Busy Bee Maintenance & Zook Custom Homes.
Other items mentioned were; Mark’s son Michael will take over the weekly mowing duties in mid April. Our AMA charter has been taken care of. Our intro pilots are insured. Bob (RG) Shireman reported on the library show at Martinsville, scheduled for 4/12. The club picnic will be held on 5/20. Bring a covered dish & the club will supply the hot dogs & hamburgers. A new location for the Christmas dinner will be selected for 2001. Charlie lost his money last time due to the rescheduling caused by bad weather & the club lost some money too.
New business; Lou was called by a teacher, about a student building a rocket, looking at our field as a possible place to launch it. Tom reported that a new Cook Building is in the works & we may loose our meeting place. Tom will check out some options. Matt volunteered his office as a meeting place. A motion was made to pay Michael an additional $10.00, every two weeks, to mow the three islands between the pits & the runway. RG made the motion, Bob Watson seconded the motion, & it passed. The swap meet next year may be held at the Armory in Bloomington. There would be 150 tables available! Bob Watson will check out prices & dates. Randy Byers did the show & tell segment with his new F6F Hellcat, from Wing Manufacturing. A motion to close was made by RG & seconded by Randy. The meeting was closed at 7:33. N9JPX reporting...
May Meeting 5/9/2001
The May meeting was called to order by Mark at 7:03:00. We had a total of eighteen people present & three of them were visitors. The visitors were interested in becoming club members & another person who could not attend was also interested in becoming a member. All four were voted into the club. Please welcome Darrell Sisson, Jeremy Barbarick, Arron Tutterow, & Jeff Field. I hope I got those names right. The new information hasn’t been completely ironed out yet. The fun-fly format was discussed & sounds like it will turn out to be a fun day of flying. That’s why they call it a fun-fly! Saturday, July 14 is the date. The club field is the place.
The next meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club will be held on June 13, 2001, at the club field on Wylie Road, not in the Cook Bldg. Come early & play with airplanes. The meeting will start around 7:00 p.m. Bring a lawn chair, some insect repellent, & a can of pop or 2. This is something new that we are going to try & see how it works out. Stay tuned to see where we will be meeting in July. The meeting was closed at 7:55 p.m.
Library Show Report
by Bob Shireman
The Monroe County R/C Club was represented at a model aviation display in the Morgan County Public Library on Thursday evening, April 12, 2001, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. We had a good turnout of pilots but not such a good turnout from John Q. Public. The two dozen or so people that did
attend, asked a lot of questions about the hobby & our club.
All of our able pilots were kept busy demonstrating everything from covering a trainer to building & flying an Extra 300.
The videos from past air-shows & competitions were a big hit with the crowd. The computer flight simulator was kept busy the entire evening also.
I would like to say thanks to all our pilots for bringing their aircraft & helping with the demonstrations. Members from the club who helped were; Bill Black, Charlie Thompson, Randy Byers, Brian Elliott, Andrew & Bob Shireman. We also had some help from the Academy of Model Aeronautics. On short notice, they sent us a nice “mall show” package containing a lot of printed information & the video tape “All Because of Model Airplanes”.
Thanks again to all!
Spring Picnic
This coming Sunday 5/20/2001 is the date for our Monroe County R/C Club’s Spring picnic. The club will furnish the freshly grilled hot dogs & hamburgers around 1:00 p.m. (EST). Members should bring their families, a covered dish, table service, sodas, lawn chairs, & of course, something to fly. The flying should get underway around 8:00 a.m. & lunch will be ready around 1:00 p.m. The flying will resume immediately after lunch & continue until dark. We hope to see you there!
Interesting Bits...
We lost three aircraft at Nebo memorial Field in Martinsville on Thursday 5/3/2001.
Clark from Plainfield had a dead stick landing out in the rough stuff. Don’t use steel screws in your landing gear!
Randy’s cub had a nice smooth landing in a big tree. Chart those receiver batteries!
Jimmy’s Somethin Extra met an untimely death way up in the grave yard. The cause was attributed to dumb thumbs.
Charlie’s dumb thumb should get it’s stitches out this week. Keep that first aid kit handy!
Old Dad finally cut the cord! Andrew Shireman got to “solo”, with his Goldburg Eagle II ARF, on Sunday 5/13 2001! Congratulations Andrew!
Late Newsletter...
Sorry for the late newsletter this time. It’s been a busy month & typing on the computer has not been the highest priority. The IMAC contest at Clinton, Indiana was up near the top. It was an interesting experience. I didn’t do very well, according to the judges, but did very well in my own mind. I didn’t crash, had two good landings, & only blew one maneuver while flying the pattern four times. We got to hob-knob with the big boys & had a great time. Our own Dave Poland was in third place ,in the Sportsman class, after the first round. I believe politics got in the way during the second round but that’s another story.
If you have something for the newsletter, send it to me via e-mail at or get it to me at a club meeting or at the field. We want your input!
Fuel Order
The fuel order for 2001 has been completed by Dave Poland. If you ordered fuel, you will be notified when the shipment arrives. The price is up a little, over last year, but is still much better than buying over the counter. It’s just a good thing it didn’t go up as much as gasoline has, over the last year. We would all be building an electric.
