May 2003 Edition
April Meeting
Notes…
There were
twenty-one people present at 7:16 pm (EST), when the April 9 meeting of the
Monroe County R/C club was called to order. Three new members were voted into
the club. Please welcome Jerry Keener of Bloomington, Damon Ferguson of
Martinsville, & Damon’s grandfather, Delbert Davis, also of Martinsville.
Jerry has an electric Zagi & a 40 size Sig Kadet trainer ARF. Damon has a
Thunder tiger 40 size trainer ARF & plans to build a “V” tailed glider &
a C-141 transport, in the future. He’s got plenty of time to work on them
because he’s getting started in the wide world of R/C at the ripe old age of
eleven!
The Treasure Chest hobby shop in
Bloomington has had a lot of customers in looking for information about our
club. We will prepare some business cards that they can give to potential
flyers. The cards will have the club logo & a contact list of club officers.
There will also be meeting information & website listings.
The new outhouse contract should be a
done deal by the time you read this. The club voted to have a port-a pot brought
to the flying site & serviced through the flying season (May—October). This
will take a great burden off of our current, old, tired, facility & the
current, old, & tired people who have been servicing that facility.
Quotes are still being gathered to have
some new hats & shirts made up with the club logo. Bring that information to
the May meeting!
The unpredictable weather in Indiana
during the month of May has swayed the majority to vote that our May meeting
will be indoors at the Eye Center. Our June through September meetings will be
held at the club field (weather permitting).
The gravel drive at our flying site is
rapidly turning into a muddy 4X4 trail. Mark Sexton will contact our landlord
& all around trucking kind of guy, John Naylor about a load of
stone.
An emergency first aid kit should be kept
at the field at all times. We have had one at the field at times but the vandals
keep making off with them. Rich Baylor has volunteered to put another first aid
kit together & try to keep it at the field. Several members carry a first
aid kit in their vehicle. Just something else to think about next time you’re at
Wallmart with a few extra bucks.
The meeting was closed at
7:58...
Things you should know…
If you haven’t paid your dues, get with
the program! You will be taken off the snail mailing list & loose your
flying privileges at the club field!
It’s nearly impossible to fill a closed
container with liquid if the container doesn’t have a vent to let the trapped
air out! It’s also nearly impossible to pump that fluid back out of a filled
container if there is no vent to let some air back in!
Don’t get confused after reading the
above & leave the return hose for your fuel bottle laying in the top of your
field box! Unused fuel should be stored in a sealed container, not in the open
top of your field box! Nobody will laugh when you fill up your box, if that’s
what you’re thinking…
Bobby Cottingham has been doing some
buddy box training, when his glow lighter works.
Dick Hartung is also doing some buddy box
training, when his batteries aren’t dead.
It’s not a good idea to rig your
throttle to speed up when the retractable gear is lowered. It’s rough on the
test pilot.
There is a new way to shorten a prop that’s a little long
without any cutting. Leave some of the cowl screws a little loose & it will
slowly move forward during flight & rub that extra length right off the
prop.
Your heli will loose power in a big hurry if the muffler falls
apart during flight. It’s not a big problem, only about 150 dollars
worth.
How can one be expected to expand their model aircraft fleet
while sinking money into the vehicle that transports them???
Nose heavy is usually flyable. Tail heavy is usually
fatal!
Jeff McGlocklin is healing up from cancer
surgery. Drop him a note or card & let him know we are pulling for him to
get well soon! His address is 8250 East Hash Road, Bloomington, IN 47408. His
e-mail address is jaflyin@netzero.net
J
immy Vanvleet is the photographer this month.
Here’s a shot of the 60 size trainer he built with Dave Poland.
Naturally it’s got a twin cylinder engine for power.
The other scenes he captured are from our annual trek to the
Toledo show. As you will see, the trip was strictly business. Monkey
business…
John Lockhart has a couple of airplanes for
sale. He has a Great Planes J3 Cub (20 size) with an OS 26 4-stroke & a
Great Planes 40 size Spitfire with an OS 46 FX 2-stroke. You can call John’s
cell phone at 812-371-6964. His address is 4595 Plum Creek Road, Nashville, IN
47448.
Your proof reader this month was Andrew Shireman. Please direct
all complaints to him!
