GENERAL:May Meeting...
There were 13 people in attendance at the May meeting. The meeting got underway at 7:09:43 after Tom got the flat tire changed on his vehicle. There was one visitor present who was voted into the club. Please welcome Robert Salzarulo of Bloomington when you see him at the field. The recent nice weather has caused an attendance drop at the meeting but this should improve as everyone gets caught up with their outdoor Spring chores. Several members have been flying on Wednesday evenings and going straight from the field to the meeting.
Dust...
As you may have noticed, when the wind is from the South, we have a dust problem at the club field on Wylie Road. On weekdays the truck traffic can be very heavy and make quite a mess in the air & on everything exposed. You can try to cover your equipment and wear a dust mask while at the field or voice your opinion about the condition of the road to the Monroe County Highway Department at 812-825-5355. There has been some utility work going on for some time but when that work is finished, it would be very nice to have the road chipped & sealed or salted to reduce the dust storm. You wouldn't intentionally pour lapping compound into the gimbals of your transmitter but that's what's happening when you leave it sitting in that limestone cloud for hours at a time, not to mention what it's doing to your engine and your lungs!
Tall Grass...
Michael Sexton has taken over the weekly mowing of the "short" grass. He does the runway, the pits, and the front area around the shelter. The "tall" grass between the pits & the runway & the areas East & West of the shelter aren't part of that deal. In the last couple of drought years it wasn't much of a problem. Dave & I cut it a couple of times last year but this spring has been a bumper crop for the "tall" grass. The extra added limestone dust from the road really makes it grow. It's now officially "out of control". It's going to have to be brush hogged or cut & baled. Until we get it back under control, we may have to make the taxi lane wider or carry the big planes out to the runway if their wing span is greater than the width of the taxi way. The spectators like to be able to see the planes on the runway but right now they have to be three feet high to see them from the shelter area.
Assume Nothing...
When you arrive at the field, the first thing on the brain is to get unloaded & get into the air. There might not be anyone else there & you think it's safe to turn on your transmitter without having the frequency pin. Wrong! There might be a glider pilot way out in the field somewhere that you didn't notice or someone might be doing a cross country flight & they are 2 miles down the road riding in the back of a pick up truck heading for a landing at the field. What if another member drives up while you are in the air, opens the cabinet & grabs the pin for the frequency that you're flying on? Avoid disaster & be safe. Go the frequency control cabinet and get the pin for your frequency before you turn on that transmitter! There should be a pin for all aircraft frequencies in the cabinet including the amateur (ham) bands. If you should forget & take a pin home, please let someone know as soon as possible. It might not seem like a big deal now but it will be if your pride & joy ends up a pile of splinters because someone shot it down.
National News...
I received the AMA's national newsletter for May 2000 and I'll bring it to the June club meeting for all to see. The big news is that the AMA Grand Event may be moved out of state next year. If you want to attend this year's event at the AMA HQ in Muncie, it will be held June 9 - 11. I believe the Hoosier Hills Air Show Team will be performing at the event on Sunday June 11.
Miscellaneous Info...An event calendar can be accessed from the clubs Website. Please follow the link on the main page to get there. Anyone can use this Calendar and make a posting to a message board. The only requirement is that you join the Yahoo Groups and become a registered user. Its FREE and no personal information need be provided if you do not want it made public.
The message board is a GREAT place to post items you have for sale and make some general announcements.
There is also a photo album section there. Anyone can post a photo of what ever subject (model airplane club related please) they want! We have made several albums for you to add your photo... or you can make your own!
Please try to keep photos limited to 50k or less. We have only 5 meg of space available to post photos and it'll go fast. If you have pictures that you would like to post, please e-mail them to Lou and he'll get them posted on the main website.
If anyone would like to buy a Club shirt or hat please drop Bruce a line. The shirts sell for $21.50 and the hats are $9.00.
